Hi ladies,

Just after some opinions! I booked a 3D / 4D scan for this weekend. I’m 18 weeks and was super excited to find out the gender and stuff!

But my mums now put a downer on it saying I shouldn’t go as they’re harmful to the baby as the expose them the the ultrasound waves for too long etc etc..she sent me a link to the nhs website which kind of says they are but they aren’t?

Just wanted to get opinions as now I don’t want to go!

If scans were that bad and risky I wouldn't be having two scans a week on the NHS for medical reasons... They'd just deliver the baby instead

It doesn’t work like that though.

Titty absolutely, I’ll be interested to see if she ends up left handed though.

It particularly her brain they’re scanning too due to fetal anaemia.

Bless her. Hope all goes well.

Is left-handedness classed as a disease or a disability now?! Confused

ATailofTwoKitties · 05/04/2018 11:29

Nearest I can find is a bit out of date: it's a 2009 paper reviewing 61 other studies, and says 'Ultrasonography in pregnancy was not associated with adverse maternal or perinatal outcome, impaired physical or neurological development, increased risk for malignancy in childhood, subnormal intellectual performance or mental diseases. According to the available clinical trials, there was a weak association between exposure to ultrasonography and non-right handedness in boys.'

As a leftie I could answer that in several ways.

It’s not, of course. But if it can cause changes to handedness, what else might it change?

TittyGolightly I asked that question as a fellow leftie!
