Hi

I'm going to Spain at 30 weeks I've got a fit to fly from my doctor and can fly with the airline until 36 so no problems there

Does anybody have any tips or anything I should know? I'm a bit weary about using the swimming pool, staying in the sun too long etc so some advice would be good :)

Thanks

Just make sure your insurance covers early delivery. Although with Spain it's not like USA bill wise but best to be covered.
Apart from that just enjoy yourself!

Oh and take your notes in your hand luggage.

You're covered for pregnancy related medical emergencies via your EHIC but check your insurance will cover other costs, e.g. if the worst happened and you were stuck in Spain with a premature baby in hospital, or you had to organise a repatriation flight.

When I was pg with my first, my work travel insurance covered me up to 26 weeks. I got back from a work trip to South Africa just before the 26 week mark; I was in hospital with threatened premature labour a week later. I was physically fit and had had no pregnancy issues before that.

You are most likely perfectly fit to travel but you still need to check what your insurance will cover, up to which week of pregnancy.

I've got basic travel insurance and it hasn't even asked if I'm pregnant? Didn't know if that was normal or not

I'd call themand double check.
Then make a record of who you spoke to when if they say you're covered.

Is there anything I can be aware off for the baby? Can I sunbathe etc

check travel insurance, often they will not cover pregnancy/birth issues after a certain gestation. They don't need to mention it, it's in the product disclosure that you read..!

Katescurios · 04/04/2018 07:11

You'll need extra hydration and to take it a bit easier in the heat. Be careful not to get too much sun as you don't want heatstroke or to burn. Skin can be more sensitive in pregnancy so do a patch test with your suncream before you go.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 04/04/2018 07:18

Absolutely get pregnancy specific travel insurance. Most insurance companies won’t cover you properly once you are 30 weeks. I used Ravenhall’s mamm2be policy when I travelled at 35 weeks and it wasn’t pricey and gives full coverage for all eventualities (including £500 to spend on baby equipment if you need to get stuff out there).

You are ok to sunbathe, but be aware that your skin is likely to be much more sensitive in pregnancy so you’ll need strong sun protection. Obviously be more cautious about overheating/sun stroke and dehydration.

Swimming is absolutely fine and feels amazing when pregnant. Enjoy the holiday!

Your insurance almost certainly won't cover you - I had a really hard time covering even up to 28 weeks. You'll be covered for health care but there are still risks - for example if you developed any complication that meant you couldn't travel, accommodation until and then potentially after the birth, or if you need to cancel due to a pregnancy related issue. I'd call your insurer asap to at least know where you are at.

twobambinos · 04/04/2018 08:52

Holycrap lots of insurances cover travel to 36 weeks now if you are expecting one baby.
Op ill be travelling at around the same time as you. For the insurance to be validated and also for the airline i need the fit to fly letter from my doctor. The insurance also covers cancellation if I'm not fit to fly. You need to ring them and make sure because its in the small print somewhere.

I think there is something about doing breast stroke in pregnancy maybe read up on that although I'm not sure if I was reading that because i previously suffered with spd or not.

twobambinos · 04/04/2018 08:53

Op when I say around the same time I mean the same stage of pregnancy

welshweasel · 04/04/2018 08:57

You can sunbathe and swim but be careful not to burn as your skin will be more sensitive. Relax, read, eat, sleep. I’m sure it will be lovely.

But please just check your insurance covers your baby if they were born there. So many policies don’t - mine covered me up to 36 weeks but didn’t cover a premature birth.

Emaline · 04/04/2018 08:58

You need to check the small print of your insurance. Not only that it cover you for pregnancy related complications and early delivery but also just as importantly that it then covers your newborn for care as a separate person.

Nothing wrong with travel at 30 weeks if all is going well but would be very irresponsible not to check this. Take out an additional policy if needed. Make sure they know your are pregnant, it's a 'pre-existing condition' in terms of insurance and it's your responsibility in the small print of policies to advise of any changes to your health.

Holycrapwhatnow · 04/04/2018 09:09

Welshweasel yes, that's the bit I meant - many will cover you for certain complications of pregnancy but not delivery of a viable baby, or the newborn after birth. Specialist insurance is different but op says she has standard basic, which is pretty much guaranteed not to. Doesn't mean you shouldn't travel but 100% means you need to check. Also check how recent your fit to fly needs to be - some airlines and insurers say within a certain number of days before leaving

liquidgold5 · 04/04/2018 09:32

Yeah I'll go to my doctor the day the same week I'm due to go the 1st May
