Requesting a fit note

Have a GP appointment tomorrow as I've now been off work for over 7 days with awful morning sickness.

Do I just ask the GP straight off that I need a fit note or do I just explain what it wrong and hope they give me one?

Not sure of the 'correct protocol', never had one before!

Just ask for one, save you having to go back

Just say you’ve self certified for 7 days and need a fit note and some anti endemics while you’re there. You have my absolute sympathy, 2 X HG sufferer, spent 9 desperate occasions in hospital over 2 pregnancies. Was once so sick that the paramedics had to give me three of the injections to stop the spewing when I threw my own stomach lining into a towel 🤮🤢

God speed, I hope you improve soon and there’s a great Hyperemesis group on here somewhere with some ladies with some great knowledge about drugs and various therapies that you may find helpful.

Oh gosh @FellOutOfBed2wice that sounds dreadful!!

Mine isn't that bad thankfully. I'm only sick around 4 or 5 times a day so not HG level, but I have horrendous nausea almost constantly that's like seasickness, feel like the room is always spinning, can't sleep, can't stand up for more than 5 minutes without being dizzy and having to sit down again (or vomit!).

GreenMeerkat that could easily be HG level, there's more to it than just the sheer number of vomits per day - it certainly sounds like you should be asking for medication to help you. Constantly feeling nauseous and being sick 4-5 times a day isn't normal.

I’m a GP. Just say what’s been happening and explain you need a fit note at the start. Then discuss medication. This might sound odd, but sometimes it can be really hard to figure out what patients’ want as everyone needs/wants something different (just a diagnosis, or treatment too, a referral, reassurance etc).

Most of us have 10 minute appointments so telling us straight away what you are looking for is very helpful Smile

Hope you feel better soon Flowers
