Tilted uterus - only yolk sac visible :(

Has anyone been told they have a tilted uterus and had issues with transvaginal ultrasounds early on? I had a miscarriage last month so haven't got an LMP, but going by ovulation (I was using OPK's) - 14 days, I was 5w 5d when I had a transvaginal scan to rule out an ectopic (due to history of an ectopic - no spotting/pain in this pregnancy!) and they saw an empty gestional sac through an abdominal scan. They did try a transvaginal as well but I think they had a lot of difficulty seeing anything as they said my uterus is very tilted.

I went back 6 days later (6w 4d) and they saw a yolk sac through an abdominal scan but no fetal pole. Again they tried a transvaginal but still couldn't see much else :( the doctor wasn't worried in the slightest and said they'd likely have seen a heartbeat in a few days. I have another appointment when I'm 8w 4d in just over a week, but I'm just filled with dread :( my last 2 pregnancies were an ectopic and a miscarriage, and I'm terrified I have a blighted ovum or something. One good thing is that I've had no pain or spotting like I had in my last 2, and both of them 'ended' before 6 weeks and I'm now 7 weeks and my pregnancy symptoms are quite severe - lots of nausea and being sick, and painful boobs which I didn't have in my last 2!

So I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with a tilted uterus causing transvaginal scan problems and them not seeing a fetus at 6-7 weeks? It looked like to me the abdominal scan was much clearer and he seemed to find it straight away, just no fetal pole :(

Hi Op,

Didn’t want to read and run , how stressful for you to keep going back without a confirmation.
One of my friends had something similar happen and each time got a little more information, it all worked out, they told her that even a couple of days can make all the difference. At 6 weeks the embryo is the size of a lentil so it’s probably pretty hard to see ?!
Fingers crossed for you for your next scan!

I also have a retroverted uterus, I had an abdominal scan (I was expecting vaginal but not needed) at about 7or 8 weeks which showed a fetal pole - results can vary a lot depending on ovulation, implantation etc. Fingers crossed

I had a viability scan at 7w and they saw everything was ok even with the tilted womb with a transvaginal scan.

I think it's hard to see much before 7 weeks with a tilted uterus so I wouldn't panic too much just yet ( easier said than done I know ) can't you have a BT for a hormone check, surely that would tell more accurately if the pregnancy was progressing? Could you ask for that?

Good luck

Thanks everyone :) I'm hoping that it's normal to not see the fetal pole on an abdominal scan until a bit later on, because every transvaginal scan I've had I've had comments on how difficult it is to see anything due to the tilt of my uterus. So I'm kind of not surprised they couldn't see much else there. What would be expected to be seen an abdominal scan at around 6 weeks, and then 8 weeks?

My main worry is a blighted ovum from what I've read, as even though there's a yolk sac it doesn't mean it's not blighted :( but I'm hoping that the strength of my symptoms (boobs are getting even sorer now and have sensitive nipples too) is a good sign! Plus I'm guessing the fact that it 'progressed' from no yolk sac visible to seeing a yolk sac in 6 days is a good sign?

In my previous scans where they couldn't even see a gestational sac, they checked my bloods straight after and retested after 48 hours, and that's when they discovered my problems as my hCG was extremely low when in my pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage. They haven't mentioned bloods to me this time, I guess because they can see a yolk sac, but I was a bit shocked at how confident they were, basically saying they're sure all is fine and they'll see the baby at my 8 week scan. Can't remain that positive though :(

I have tilted uterus.
I had suspected ectopic and was sent for a scan at 6 weeks where I had internal scan that saw only an empty yolk sac. I went back 10 days later and I got to see a thriving heartbeat Smile

I understand your worry (I've had previous miscarriages also) but it sounds like everything is on track so far. Theres really nothing that can be done until your next scan so try not to stress yourself too much x

@ForeverHopeful21 So glad yours went well :) my ectopic was just awful and I really hope I never go through that again! So whatever happens one silver lining is that this pregnancy is in the right place :)

Yeah I have a tilted uterus and the TV scans (aka Dildo scans) always hurt like hell.

Dd1 was akward to find until 12 weeks then she was fine, this time round baby was same and 12 weeks totally visible.

Only issue I had in labour with TU was i felt her stick so I asked for forceps intervention to help her past the tilt and she was born fine and only a small episiotimy for me
