Been diagnosed with Polyhydramnios...

I'm 38+2 today with baby number 1, and I've just been diagnosed with polyhydramnios.

Pregnancy has been up and down, with baby measuring big and small for dates at various points, which has been picked up at serial growth scans.

I'm having a GTT this week to rule out late onset gestational diabetes, and blood tests to rule out a virus.

I'm just freaking out a little as midwife mentioned that when my waters break there is a chance that the cord can come out first, so I'll need to come in as soon this happens.

I guess I'm just looking for good news stories from people who have had this.

I had it with my last baby. When my waters went it was spectacular but her head was in my pelvis so the cord was fine. Unassisted vaginal delivery with gas and air only. Back in pre pregnancy clothes within a week because the water seemed to have been carried everywhere and I just shrunk and peed loads in that first week after birth. Ended up being half a stone lighter than pre pregnancy within a month.

Hi amysaurus, no advice but wanted to say hi as I’m in the same situation and I’m 38 weeks today. Was diagnosed at 34 weeks.

I’ve been told the same as you, to come in urgently if my waters break at home and if I get contractions first to come in right away as they would prefer my waters to break in hospital so they can keep an eye on me/the baby. The consultant was pretty reassuring, said if the head is engaged there is less risk of their being cord complications. Hope your GTT goes ok x

Hi,

I had polyhydraminos and because of this I was induced on my due date - my little girl is now 2 weeks old! Do you know whether or not/ how much your baby is engaged? I had been warned also about cord prolapse and the need to call an ambulance if my waters were to break however by 39 weeks when I saw the consultant her head was already engaged so the risk of cord prolapse was now minimal as it was unlikely she would disengage. I had 2 GTT tests both came back negative, please don't worry too much as although there are causes for polyhydraminos the most common reason is no reason at all! With regards to your waters breaking be prepared for a flood! My waters went at around 2am and an hour later I was taken to the delivery suite I was examined and advised that my waters had only partially gone and the midwife would need to break them herself. Further to this when my little girl was born there was a further rush of water that sprayed across the room and all up the wall! Good Luck Smile

Thanks everyone for the reassurance!

@moo888 midwife hasn't said how engaged baby is, I know baby is head down though, I have a midwife appointment next week so I'll ask her to check for me, I've also got a consultant appointment next week as well.

I had it with DS. No obvious reason.

I was told if my waters went (which they did, rather spectacularly) to feel for the cord. If I could feel it then get down on my knees with my head on the floor and call an ambulance. If not then to get my self in straight away anyway.

Waters went (at 37+4), no prolapse, contractions started 30 mins later, baby born with just gas and air 3 hours after that.

I had this with my little girl. I only found out following a private scan at 34 weeks as something just didn't feel right to me. The community midwives weren't interested at all to be honest and just said not to worry. At 36 weeks I got referred for a position scan as they couldn't tell if baby was engaged and it was only at the hospital that they took my concerns seriously and sent me for a growth scan. Various investigators (for GD etc.) followed and they concluded she was too small and recommend induction. Was 37+3 at this point. They said they wouldn't have induced just for PH but the combo of that and her size meant she was safer out than in. So (sorry I'm totally waffling) went in to be induced but she was swimming all over the place and her heart rate wasn't active enough so had c-section and my waters exploded in spectacular fashion over the theatre and surgical team Blush

She was a tiny little scrap at only 2.1kg but now at 6 months old she's perfectly delicious and almost on the 50th centile after being born off the bottom of the chart!

Anyway that's my experience. I was so upset and worried to find out about the polyhydramnios but it's all worked out absolutely fine. Apparently when picked up late (rather than at 12 or 20 weeks) there's usually no known reason for it. So I'm sure you and your baby will be absolutely fine!

Thanks again everyone, feeling a lot easier about it all now! Glad I posted here rather than resorting to Dr Google!

Had it twice and also had Gestational Diabetes with second pregnancy. I had to be monitored during both births (on the belt in the labour ward). No problems presented themselves and the only noticeable thing was the amount of water when my waters were broken.

TriJo · 03/04/2018 23:01

Had a mild case of it on #2, I was diagnosed at 35 weeks at a growth scan after my first bout of reduced movements. I was induced at 38 weeks after a second bout of reduced movements and my waters were broken on labour ward as part of the process - there was quite a lot of fluid! Baby is almost 9 weeks old now.

Aspenn17 · 07/04/2018 16:12

How did you get on this week @amysaurus? Did you see the consultant? Hope it went well. Got my appt on Thursday.

amysaurus87 · 07/04/2018 17:39

@Aspenn its been an ok week my GTT came back all clear as did the bloods for a virus, so they are not sure of the cause, looks like it might be one of those things.

Consultant appointment has been moved to next Friday (13th!!) Which is 2 days before my due date...just hoping that waters don't go while I'm home alone, especially as I have no idea how far/if baby is engaged, all I know is baby is head down.
