A good 'present from the baby' for 22-mth DD?

Am having a baby next month and have read about people buying a present from the baby for their toddlers, to smooth over the new arrival. Anyone got any good suggesetions? DD will be 22 months and is quite a boisterous, outgoing toddler. She's just starting to take an interest in dollys and prams, so had wondered about that? Any other good tips for what might be a tricky time much appreciated too!

DD was a bit older (2.9) when DS arrived and we bought her a wooden work bench and tools which she LOVED. Sounds like a dolly would be great though then she can copy what you are doing - I have a fantastic photo of DD bfing her dolly in Matalan

dolly and pram def good idea as this would be like her having her own baby.Did this with ds and it worked and he was 6.
It makes them feel special as well

Yeah sounds like a doll and accessorise (sp sorry ) would be great, my LO is just having a hissy fit as my new ring sling has arrived and she NEEEEEEEEEEEEDS one for dolly, just had to email the lovely lady who made it and ask for a child size one!!

Sounds like Baby Annabelle might be the answer. I had wondered whether she'd like a break from baby things, but perhaps having one of her own is the right thing. Thanks!

When my sister was born I got a massive knitted postman pat toy (he was, and still is my favourite). I loved him and took him everywhere. In fact- hes still sitting behind our sofa. A compromise me and hubby have!

This is a great thread. I've been wondering the same thing. Dd will be 2 1/5 when my baby is born. She's got several dolls but keeps saying that she's got a baby in her tummy too. It's a lovely idea to get her a new baby doll so she thinks her baby has been born when I've had mine.

We bought a fairy princess pop up castle (ELC little tent thing), she loved it - had tea parties with dollies/teddies in, read stories in it etc, we put it in our sitting room and it was like a new special little room for her.

ZoeC · 10/05/2007 14:51

We got dd1 Baby Annabel from dd2, she would sit next to me breastfeeding it

nailpolish · 10/05/2007 14:53

BAby Annabell ws a big hit in our house (my dd1 was 24 months when her wee sister was born) but id just like to say unless you can afford it obviously, dont spend loads of money on the baby annabell accessories. newborn baby gros from tesco fit baby annabell really really well, asda and ELC do little cute buggies for £5 that can be thrashed around the garden.
and the nappy novelty wears off, and hankies do the job just as well anyway
good luck!

PinkTulips · 10/05/2007 14:54

dd was 18 months and i brought her to the toyshop and let her pick something herself as i credited her with too much intelligance to believe the baby in my tummy had gone shopping

the same day we went and picked a special bear for her to give the baby which i think meant even more to her.

when we brought ds home we brought both presents down and she gave himhis bear and played with her own toy and was generally spoiled rotten by us and my mom ho had minded her over night while i had him.

nailpolish · 10/05/2007 14:54

i like Alice182's idea as well - a place for a toddler to escape the loud wriggly thing!

nailpolish · 10/05/2007 14:56

oh yes and the same as pinktulips here - dd1 was more excited abou the giant rabbit SHE had picked out for the new baby - she constantly reminds dd2 "i chose that for you all by myself"

Ahh, thank you and a good tip re Tesco vs Baby Annabelle's extensive wardrobe...

DD got Baby Annabel around this age and loved it. She's 5 now and still plays with it.

LittleMouseWithCLogsOn · 11/05/2007 12:46

nowt
i dont get this presnet idea

PurpleLostPrincess · 12/05/2007 15:02

I totally get the present idea and did it when DD1 was born (DS was 4 and a half). However, my kids will be 13 and 9 when this (DD2) is born.

Of course, they know full well where babies come from and all the logistics (I won't patronise them of course!) but I'm thinking of doing something similar as a token more than anything. Anybody got any ideas for older children or should I start a separate thread?

This will be their half sister and I want to make sure they don't feel left out which can happen no matter how old they are!!

(apologies if this is hijacking your thread - please do say and I'll start a separate one if you'd prefer). Congratulations by the way! xx

This is out of stock at the moment, but says it'll be in soon baby annabelle bargain

Pheebe · 12/05/2007 15:50

How about something really personal like a special scrap book or box they can fill with memories of their new little sister. You could start them off with copies of your scan pictures then add hand prints, photos and any other little momentos as time goes on.

Some friends of mine did this, their DD was 8 when her little bro was born she's now 12, still adds to it and its one of her most prized possessions

PurpleLostPrincess · 12/05/2007 15:55

Thank you pheebe, thats a lovely idea!

Furrymummy · 12/05/2007 16:18

GillL - my friend's nephew (who was 4 at the time when his mum was pg with his baby sister was due) told all and sundry he had a puppy growing in his tummy!

mad4girls · 12/05/2007 20:27

dd1 was 2.6y had when dd2 was born she already had dolls etc, she specifically requested that she wanted a BARBIE scooter from her baby sister or she wouldnt let herin the house!!

eidsvold · 13/05/2007 01:10

if that is what she is showing an interest in - go for it - her own baby and pram would be fab for her. My dd2 was fascinated with babies and already had a load of dolls - courtesy of older sister as well as her own - so we got her a gorgeous anne geddes count to 10 book with fab pics of babies.

here {

dd2 loves looking at the babies in the pictures.
