Wisdom tooth infection...

Bloody typical it's at Easter when my house is full of chocolate!!

Ever since I found out I was pregnant (I am in week 9), my gums have been a bit swollen and sore. And my wisdom tooth has been hurting a little. I'm not sure if acid from constant vomiting is making it worse... woke up this morning and the flap of skin over my wisdom tooth is swollen to high heaven, I can't eat, have earache, a sore throat and swollen glands.

Dentist is closed until Tuesday...

Can anyone advise and pregnancy friendly home remedies? Anti-Inflammatories are sadly off the table... Sad

Poor you 😔 I used to suffer with wisdom tooth infections a lot. Rinse your mouth with Corsadil or very hot salt water for now, you want to keep it as clean as possible. Also I’m fairly sure you can take paracetamol, but as you said not anti-inflams. Hope you feel better soon!

Aspenn17 · 01/04/2018 10:40

Sorry Corsodyl* is the correct spelling!

NicoleSalski · 01/04/2018 10:43

Thanks @Aspenn17 I've tried the salt water thing a few times this morning so hopefully it'll help but it seems to have inflamed it even more. No corsodyl and all local shops by me closed as I am rural.

Never known pain like it! I want to eat my chocolate... Sad

I've just had an extremely bad infection as I had a broken tooth (totally dental phobia!). I was using Corsodyl & boiled salt water with Garlic granules mixed in. Absolutely killed!! But pain subsided as I kept swishing (until the next time). I'm not sure if you can use the Corsodyl though, so I'd double check x

NicoleSalski · 01/04/2018 10:49

Thanks @Sushirolls - it is safe to use in pregnancy, I just can't get hold of any until Tuesday sadly!

You really should try and see an emergency dentist (if you call your usual dentist the number should be on their voicemail. You need antibiotics as infection of any kind in pregnancy is bad for the baby.

NicoleSalski · 01/04/2018 11:04

@3boysandabump I've tried phoning and they just have a regular answering machine, however after googling NHS 111 deal with dental issues also... might be worth a shot but can't help I'm wasting their time!

Whereabouts are you based? I still have some if it would help? I'd give 111 a call too x

Fidgety31 · 01/04/2018 11:07

Gargle with salt water
I often get this problem with my wisdom tooth as it never came through properly and it’s a food trap

Smurfybubbles · 01/04/2018 11:09

When I had mine coming up I used to chew on a clove which tasted absolutely rank but numbed it! Worth a shot until you can get to a dentist to check if it's infected!
Other trick was to crush up a dissolvable aspirin and rub it into my gums but not sure if you can take aspirin when pregnant so please check!

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 01/04/2018 11:11

Yes you need to see an emergency dentist. If you have a look at your normal dentist's website the details should be there, if they aren't on the voicemail message. There will always be a dentist doing out of hours somewhere in your area.

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 01/04/2018 11:19

Hot salty mouthwash should do the same job as corsodyl if you can't get any corsodyl.
You need to clean under the flap which might be difficult to do yourself, do you have any form of syringe? Like a childs medicine syringe, fill that with hot salt water as hot as you can handle it and try and wash out under the flap. It's going to hurt and it will probably bleed a fair amount but you need to really clean underneath it. Do you have any floss that you could use?
If you had any cloves or clove oil you could try rubbing that on the gum.

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 01/04/2018 11:21

Hot salty mouthwash is just not water with a teaspoon of salt in it btw Easter Smile

3boysandabump · 01/04/2018 11:33

I'm just going by what my dentist recently told me op. I waited from the Friday evening to the Monday morning to phone to make an appointment and she told me I should have called out of hours with me being pregnant.

NicoleSalski · 01/04/2018 11:35

Thanks everyone.

@3boysandabump you're right! I've spoken to NHS 111 who have said 'you really need to be seen within 24 hours but there's nothing available at all due to it being a bank holiday so you'll have to try and get an appointment with your dentist on Tuesday'

Sound advice 🙈

Wow thats really bad!
My son had to see an emergency dentist once and they just gave me a number to call and opened a surgery somewhere. It just depend on area.
Could you maybe try emergency pharmacy and see if they can prescribe some for you?

Mooselet24 · 01/04/2018 11:43

I have had 2 tooth infections this pregnancy am 26 weeks atm, am on another course of antibiotics atm as they won't touch the tooth till after birth! I feel your pain, try salt and hot water!

Starlight7777 · 01/04/2018 11:48

Is there a Chemist open, usually is one open on a bank holiday.

Try beta.nhs.uk/find-a-pharmacy/ for those open in your area.

Hope you feel better, tooth pain is horrid!

NicoleSalski · 01/04/2018 11:50

Thanks all. Googling chemists now!

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 01/04/2018 11:52

Wow that's awful!

Could you maybe get an OOH appointment with a GP? Obviously they don't normally do teeth stuff but they might be able to prescribe something to tide you over until Tuesday.

PenguinChristmas · 01/04/2018 11:53

I have had similar many times. You may need antibiotics to clear it up which the dentist can prescribe but in the mean time Corsodyl does amazing stuff! If I get a slight flare up I use that and it clears right up. Also rinse with warm salt water

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/04/2018 11:55

On the plus side the pain from an infected wisdom tooth is worse than childbirth so at least you know you'll be ok in labour xxx

NicoleSalski · 01/04/2018 11:59

Trying to track down some corsodyl!

Haha @KaliforniaDreamz now is that so?! I don't believe it!

Corsodyl mouthwash and also clove oil dabbed onto the sore point using a cotton bud....only if safe to use obviously....good luck x
