Shoulder Dystocia in first pregnancy

Had a really tough delivery with DS, it transpired afterwards that he had Shoulder Dystocia. He wasn’t a big baby at 8lb 15oz but I have read that with myself being overweight it could be me that caused it.

Now PG with DC2 and have a consultant appointment for when I’ll be around 24 weeks. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I was wondering if I’ll need to be induced early or will receive extra scans?

I had shoulder dystocia with my first baby. I had extra scans and consultant care throughout second pregnancy. We discussed planned c section. No definite decision was made and never was made as I ended up going into labour 2 weeks before due date. All was fine with delivery but I had worried all the way through the pregnancy and fretted about lack of clear direction. Hope it goes well for you.

I had SD with first pregnancy. I was offered a CS and I took it. I loved the elcs, it actually was a pleasant birth experience compared with the first!

Thank you for your replies. I have been told by my midwife that i will be required to see a consultant but that’s as far as the conversation went.

@TheOnlyAletheia did you have a C Section before 40 weeks?

You won’t need an induction or extra scans. Depending on how bad the shoulder dystocia was or how worried you are they could offer you a lscs. Which will take place anytime from 39 weeks onwards depending on space. But there could be things in your last labour which would raise your risk for a dystocia which could be avoided this time so they may discuss any such issues.

Yes - at 38 weeks

@MrsJoshDun I’m unsure how bad it was. I did haemorrhage which resulted in a near transfusion. But unsure whether that was due to the Dystocia.

Yes and it was advised that I had a cs second time around.

They should be able to tell from your notes what they needed to do to get baby out, there’s kind of a list of manoeuvres you do and it depends how far down the list you got.

They’ll also look at things like if you had an instrumental which raises your risk. But having had one you are at increased risk for another. Saying that the majority of women who have one with their first won’t with their second.
