Hello

I'm 6 weeks pregnant.

I currently weight 14st 10 and am 5ft 5

I am really anxious about the booking in appointment and about the risks that are higher as I'm considered to be obese according to my BMI.

Are there any other plus size Mumma to be's out there?

How has your pregnancy been?

Have you had more appointments?

Have you felt judged?

Have you been advised to try and loose weight?

I am 15st 5'10 and have not felt judged one little bit. I've not been consider high risk, I had a diabetes test but that's it. My midwife is lovely, plenty of plus size women have babies, don't worry x

EL332 · 28/03/2018 23:22

❤️ @twistedpink thank you !

I think that's what I needed to hear - am laying awake panicking about my booking in appointment that hasn't even been made yet - we aren't always very kind to ourselves are we!

Please don’t worry. I have a high bmi. I’ve been tested for gd which came back clear and i have growth scans at 28/32/36/40 weeks. I’ve had one so far and baby was on track. I’m healthier than I’ve ever felt and have loved being pregnant. I’ve never once been judged.

EL332 · 29/03/2018 06:40

@Thelampshadelady ❤️ thank you - it's so reassuring for me to hear xxx

Hey @EL332

Shamefully I'm 5ft 7" and 16st 4lbs Blush

You've just got to make the best decisions for you and your baby going forward and try not to worry about it. Eat right, get some exercise in and that's really all you can do.

From what I've read the MW's at appointments won't give you a hard time but you may just have to go to a few more appointments than the average person.

I had a slightly different experience. My booking appointment was great but when I went for my scan, I had a consultant appointment.
The consultant didn’t have English as a first language so it may have been lost in translation a little but she kept saying
‘Well, fat people have higher risks of this, fat people that etc’
There was no hints or tips, just telling me that because I was fat I was at risk of so much more.
Needless to say I cried after I left. It wouldn’t have been so bad if she had said, you may develop GD (which I did) so this is what you can do to stop it.
Anyway, I’m now pregnant with my third, and I’m even fatter so o really hope o get a different consultant.

I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant. My BMI was 30 when I got pregnant. We were in full nesting mode, tearing out the kitchen and bathrooms so we were living on takeaways for a few weeks. I started to sweat a lot, felt quite hyper and started losing weight very quickly.

I was able to control it by eating no sugar and no white / processed carbs plus eating protein at every meal. So I would do what you can now during your pregnancy to minimise your risks - eat moderate portions of wholegrain carbs with a good protein and plenty of veg for meals. Even simple changes like having one slice of toast for breakfast instead of two made a huge difference to my blood sugars. So by getting into good habits early on in your pregnancy you can hopefully prevent complications :)

Plus size 20 right here to & pregnant with my second. With my first pregnancy quiet early on I used to feel as though everyone was looking at me, what must they thinking about me etc... but as the pregnancy went on it became clear I wasn't judged at all. Of course they made clear due to being quiet over weight I fall in the high risk category & will need to have regular checks. I also had GD which was under control. All in all had a healthy baby boy emergency csection & now 3yrs on pregnant with my second Wink

MrsMonkey13 · 31/03/2018 14:55

@neithernowtnorsummat01 (not sure if I’m tagging properly here) but my first scan/consulation was exactly the same. I kept expecting her to wrap it up with “here’s how you lose weight safely during pregnancy..” but nothing! It just felt like being attacked with no purpose. I didn’t cry as I’ve had worse things said about my weight for years but I was pretty peeved to say the least

guiltynetter · 31/03/2018 18:12

hello, i’m 16 weeks pregnant & a size 16-18. it’s my 2nd baby and i weighed a LOT less with my first. i was exactly the same as you i was dreading my booking in appointment but the midwife was really nice. they do weigh you but she never commented on it. at the end i asked if there would be any problems with being a lot heavier than last time & she said no.

however i am taking low dose aspirin every night (they said recommended if your bmi is over 30) and will have a gestational diabetes test as standard.

booandbumpp · 31/03/2018 18:23

I have a BMI of 30. At my booking in appointment I was given a booklet and a prescription for a higher dose of folic acid! That's about it! No judging :) fingers crossed it goes smoothly for you

lifechangesforever · 31/03/2018 18:28

My BMI is high but because all my other 'vitals' were fine, my pregnancy was deemed low risk and I've been under midwife led care the entire time.

The only time it's caused and issue is at my NHS scans (funnily enough the private ones were fine!) where they put a comment on the scan that said 'difficult scan due to maternal body habitus' which did make me laugh tbh.

You'll be fine. Women of all shapes and sizes give birth everyday Smile

neversleepagain · 31/03/2018 20:19

My BMI was high when I was pregnant with twins in 2012. I was seen regularly because I was having twins and not one person mentioned my weight. A week before my babies were born my consultant said that my pregnancy was exemplary. I gave birth to two healthy babies and was fit and well throughout my pregnancy.

Aspieparent · 31/03/2018 20:26

I am not pregnant but have had 3 babies all at plus size I had a horrible time with a particular midwife and a consultant. I was deemed as highs risk for all 3. When I was giving birth to my second I kept saying sorry to the constantly for being over weight the 4th time I said it she said you really don't need to be sorry.and I want to be honest with you I have never understood why overweight women are automatically deemed as high risk as we actually find we have more issues with women that are under weight or very small than we do with women over weight. She then told me not to worry.

gg5891 · 31/03/2018 20:33

I had BMI of 35 when I had my booking appointment. I'm now 32 weeks pregnant, I take aspirin once a day, I haven't felt judged, I've done everything I can to keep my weight gain as low as possible. I have hardly put on any weight and I found everyone has been really supportive. I think as long as it can be seen that you are doing what's best for you and your baby support is the main thing you'll find

EL332 · 31/03/2018 21:34

Thanks so much ladies ❤️

Why do you take aspirin?

I've been taking a daily prenatal vitamin and then a folic acid too separately...

I'd read about a higher dose of folic acid but haven't even got my booking in appointment yet... and might not have one until 10 weeks ..

Anything you'd suggest?

gg5891 · 31/03/2018 22:07

When you have a BMI of 35 or more they will tell you at booking to take 75mg of aspirin everyday, I think it's to thin the blood to help prevent clots forming. They'll tell you if you need to take it.
I've been taking the Tesco ones as the midwife told me they are pretty much the same as the pregnacare ones. I couldn't get to Tesco this month though so I've got pregnacare max for the last 2 months of my pregnancy.
I have also always been on 5mg of folic acid but that is due to another health condition

RosaBaby2 · 01/04/2018 10:26

I was 14st7 at booking in, I’m 35 weeks now and 15st12 and I’ve not felt judged at all in the slightest by anyone.

BMI was just over 35 so have had extra growth scans, the usual I think is 28 weeks, 32 weeks and 36 weeks (I have actually had 7 scans so far but because of low measurements and not due to my weight)

Had the GTT (negative)

Been in hospital for monitoring twice a week for the last 4 weeks due to 2 episodes of reduced movement and baby growth dropping and measuring small.

So I’ve had a lot of contact with the medical staff and not a single comment.

Not heard of the Aspirin thing either.

IF you get any negative or rude behaviour make sure you complain!

Good luck with your pregnancy Smile

EL332 · 01/04/2018 10:58

Thanks you @RosaBaby2 ❤️ good luck with your delivery! Xx

@gg5891 my bmi is 40 but haven't been told about aspirin or extra folic acid x

gg5891 · 01/04/2018 15:31

@doesthisnamelookgoodonme the folic acid is for epilepsy, but you should have been told about aspirin, they look at risk factors it's to help prevent pre-eclampsia so they take in all the risk factors and I'm a FTM and high BMI
