It doesn’t come as a great surprise - my DD was huge (11lb 5oz!) but no-one twigged in my last pregnancy 7 years ago, so I’m pleased that i’m being more closely monitored this time.

Any tips etc? I’m going to the diabetes clinic today and will prob see the dietician and get given one of those blood sugar monitoring kits. I’m so not looking forward to doing that four times a day! And all my favourite foods like choc cake etc - nooo!

I’m not best pleased at the moment, as you can tell!

Oh no. Can I ask how many weeks you are and whether your midwife did the blood test? I've got to be tested for it, but had to cancel my 24 week midwife appointment and they can't get me another one until I'm 26 weeks, I didn't think to ask whether this would be a problem from the GD testing point of view.

I can just imagine how upset you're feeling, but hopefully you'll be able to control it easily. I did read somewhere that there are some good private FB groups you can join. Hopefully someone will come on with the links to those.

Thank you!! I’m 28 weeks tomorrow so I think they test between 26-28 weeks usually - I had the glucose tolerance test yesterday where I had a blood test, drank a foul glucose drink and then had to wait an hour and a half before another blood test.

I was ravenous by then as I hadn’t eaten anything at all and had only drunk water - be prepared for an early appointment and no breakfast! I’m glad I didn’t have to wait too long before the second blood test as I would have been fainted with hunger by then! 🙄🤣

Oh gosh. That will be interesting for me, they can't find a vein unless I've eaten!

I'm so screwed up about the test and potentially having GD. I was smaller with my son so it wasn't ever discussed. It's really knocked my self esteem and I've got this really weird anxiety about other people finding out.

I hope today goes well.

Thanks for the advice @FoxtrotSkarloey I will.

They couldn’t find my veins either AP79 and usually they try both arms until they resort to my hands! (V painful!)

I’m sure you will be fine.😊 I’m a bit worried as i’ve read it can increase the chances of stillbirth, but as I’m having a c-section at 39 weeks then hopefully my baby will be out before I go overdue. I remember my DD shaking really strangely when she was born which was probably a result of low blood sugar, and my (undetected) GA - so it is def worth getting tested for it and being monitored closely.

Hi. I had GD in my 3rd pregnancy. I was devastated when I was diagnosed. I was diet controlled, then prescribed metformin (which I could not tolerate) and then changed to insulin morning and night. Being on insulin was no where near as bad as I thought it would be. There is a website called Gestational Diabetes Uk which is fantastic and offers lots of diet advice. They also have a facebook group which provides lots of support. Please don't panic. I know how worrying the diagnosis is but in most cases it is only temporary and if it keeps your baby safe I think it is best to know. I was very well supported by my diabetic midwife. Good luck.

I found Keeping my arms warm and pumping my fists before they try to take blood helpful. I struggle to part with blood-my veins hide as soon as the needle comes near and that’s without fasting.
I now insist on a butterfly needle and point out my best vein

Good luck with your GTT’s!
Will they still use lucozade?
