Help with cocodamol for pgp

After fighting it for weeks I've had to go on to painkillers as my pain has become unbearable.
I've been prescribed 30/500 cocodamol by the hospital but im struggling to get the dosage right.
2 tablets makes me feel completely out of it and 1 is just not enough.
For those of you with experience of cocodamol does the 'stoned' feeling get better as you get more used to it? I have a 3 yo and I'm really struggling to look after him.

Urgh that sucks. I sympathise, the pain is so unpleasant :(

I’m pregnant at the moment and having the same thing as last time - ALL my joints are hurting. Not just the load bearing ones, everything is clicking and painful. I feel like one of those little wooden toys where you push the base up and it collapses :(

Yeh I totally know what you mean, I really wanted to crochet this one a blanket like I did for the last one but my wrists won't let me.
At least it will come to an end, I've not been completely the same since my DS but it didn't affect me too bad after a few months. I'm just hoping it's the same again.

I know you said you're past the point of physio but I would try to see one even privately if you can as they may be able to give you advice which may help such as movement and positions. But echo what everyone else said about separate codeine tablets.

If they do induce you be warned it can take a long time - 3 days in my case so keep mobile whilst in hospital to avoid seizing up.

I take it regularly for adhesion pain, the floaty, spaced out feeling does go away if you take it regularly.

It's terrible for giving you constipation though.

What you have sounds really similar to what I had OP. No pain between legs at all, it was hips and back.

I later discovered I had bilateral trochanteric bursitis as a complication and I SO would have insisted on the lignocaine/steroid injection had I known that. I think it would really have helped.

You'll know if you have it if you have a kind of horrible ache in the outside of your hip, especially of you lie on your side, and it is usually tender on the hip point, too.

Oh I so feel for you. It is awful and people just think it is 'pregnancy aches'. It bloody well isnt.

If you need a wheelchair you need a wheelchair, it does not matter if it isnt convenient. It's what you need.

I find the 30/500 codeine/paracetamol makes me too drugged up to function as well. My GP agreed to give me separate 15mg tablets so I can decide whether to take one to four on top of my 500mg/1g paracetamol. So I can take 15, then if it's not enough I can top it up without then overdosing on paracetamol.

I've used codeine etc for chronic pain for many years and my GP knows I'm not addicted, however I think they're often reluctant to prescribe codeine on its own in case you sell it on the street or take tons of it (without the risk of a paracetamol overdose).

Some things that helped me for SPD (I was in a wheelchair):

  • Seeing a private physio regularly.
  • Heat
  • Warm baths, hydro pools
  • Follow all the advice like pillow between legs at night, plastic bag on car seat, don't push trolleys,
  • Picker upper stick thing
  • Silk sheets to help me roll over at night
  • Biofreeze

If there's a nerve pain element, or just to help you sleep, you could ask your GP about amitriptyline, it's pretty safe during pregnancy IIRC.

Just saw you're hypermobile. Me too. See a physio who deals with hypermobility.

Bad news is it may not resolve immediately after birth, like some people's does. I was still on crutches for well over a year after DC2.

What worked for me (still was in a wheelchair but was comfortable enough to function)

30mg codeine and separate paracetamol, could mix and match the combinations depending what I needed and time of day. Osteo every 10 days and religiously doing the physio excercises twuce a day.

A few times I went to hospital for some oramorph overnight, they monitored baby and I got some sleep to make me more human.

The end is in sight, remember that!

Pollaidh · 29/03/2018 21:49

Ah yes, I went to 1:1 pilates (expensive) and an AN pilates class, twice weekly, had rehab exercises in a warm hydro pool (but it closed for 2nd pregnancy).

Thanks for that ragusa that actually sounds very like my hip pain. Whenever I try to explain where it hurts I just get confused looks. I will definately bear that it mind if it continues after birth.
I really hope it does Pollaidh it's the only thing keeping me going. I was ok after my DS, I did have to build up my weakened muscles again but I had bladder issues that affected me far worse than my hips. I am much worse this time though Sad. Sorry for you that sounds so shit.

I am sorry that you are suffering so much, unfortunately even if the health care practitioners do get it there just isn't much that can be done unfortunately. I have heard lots of good things about acupuncture though so keeping everything crossed that it helps you. Thanks

scaredofthecity · 31/03/2018 22:02

Thanks. Me too!

I think if you are desperate you may be able to get the cortisone injection in pregnancy. Might be wrong tho.

Bluebirdsky · 01/04/2018 16:53

Have you got a support belt from the physio? I wore mine properly for the first time today as walking quite a bit and it really helped me.
