Shop bought pasta salad?

I have heard a bit about avoiding pre packaged sandwiches and salads etc but know there is nothing about it on the nhs food list

I’ve just had a Morrison’s cheese and tomato pasta salad (pre packed) and only thought about the listeria risk afterwards?

Do you tend to avoid these sort of things, is there a real risk of listeria with this?

I honestly wouldn't worry!

I remember reading a comment on here before where someone had said to the op - 'how many times have you had listeria from eating xyz?' And the answer was zero Smile

You'll be fine

SparklyScourer · 26/03/2018 15:25

Thanks BabyBoo I know we are more prone to these things when pregnant but I do understand they aren’t very rare

You're welcome! Hope you enjoyed your lunch!

I haven’t avoided anything like this, in fact in the early days packet sandwiches were my thing. Confused I’m now 30+6.

SparklyScourer · 26/03/2018 15:45

Yeah I’ve eaten a load of packet sandiwiches too only stopped in the past couple of months!

You’re going to have to unclench

Oblomov18 · 26/03/2018 15:53

Seriously? This is a concern? Hmm

pastabest · 26/03/2018 16:01

If it's not on the NHS list then you can eat it.

Pre packaged sandwiches are fine. I treat myself to a smoked salmon and cream cheese one from M&S every Friday.

Pasta salad is fine. I actually can't even think why on earth it wouldn't be.

Salad is fine, just make sure you wash it well.

SparklyScourer · 26/03/2018 16:04

Good grief haha! Yes it’s a small concern. I’m sure people have asked for reassurance over less on here?

(I do actually appreciate that kind of reaction though to be fair, it’s to the point!)

Yes someone once asked about tinned custard. At least with your question there is some basis behind it.

But really it's fine. Avoid eating shark, your own body weight in liver patè, and really stinky soft unpasteurised cheeses and petty much everything else in moderation is fine (I would personally probably still risk the cheese in small amounts if I really fancied some too!)

We've turned pregnancy into another way to control and guilt women and it needn't be like that at all.

Have a read of 'Expecting Better' by Emily Oster. It's an easy read and will set you free.

SparklyScourer · 26/03/2018 16:21

Thank you Pasta I will no longer stress the Pasta!

I will give it a read, recently any reason or rationale goes out of the window! I vowed just to go with the nhs list alone but it’s easier said than done

Jesus wept, you’ll be fine.

And I once saw a post a bit back about rum flavouring in a Christmas desert. Good times.

Smellyjo · 26/03/2018 16:50

Why would pre packaged sandwiches give listeria? I've never heard this.

Lndnmummy · 26/03/2018 17:10

I eat pre packed sandwhiches several times a week. No idea it was a thing to avoid?

SparklyScourer · 26/03/2018 17:40

There actually is an old mumsnet thread about the packaged sandwiches, obviously it’s all on google too but I don’t remember when I first heard it. Probably got it swiped out of my hand by one of my colleagues who are quick to tell me what’s what in pregnancy!

I've never heard of this! I've eaten quite a few packet sandwiches (currently 23 weeks). I have avoided prawn mayo, but that's about it!

BumbleNova · 26/03/2018 19:25

I also recommend the book by Emily oster. Actual science. The only thing I'm not eating is rare steak. I've decided I will risk it if I want cheese. I've never met or heard of anyone getting listeria ever from cheese. But that's my view after reading Emily's summary of the research.
