Ugh GTT

Sat in NHS cafeteria having just downed the gross sugary drink for my Glucose Tolerence test. All I can smell is bacon butties. I feel shaky from the fasting and the sugar. And I get to sit here for 2 hours, yay! Just a whinge :)

Does anyone know if I can turn it down? There's really no need for me to have it as only one of my three babies was over 10 lb. I'm not overweight, have no family history of diabetes, and no sugar in my urine. It's massively inconvenient plus a waste of NHS resources. It's just occurred to me that I might try and cancel it.

brogueish · 22/03/2018 23:37

I was offered it because my mother has type 1 diabetes, no other risk factors, and I passed. I'm sure you can turn it down, but it's really not a massive inconvenience or drain on resources, just a couple of hours and they scheduled my 28 week scan within the same window. My mother had a stillbirth at term because her diabetes hadn't been picked up, so in the grand scheme of things I was glad to have been offered the test.

Passed as in passed the test, not didn't take up the offer...

I really liked the drink Blush

Ninjamilo · 23/03/2018 08:31

I only had a GTT because I failed routine bloods - I wasn't told it was fasting and I had cake for breakfast....good thing I did as I have GD!

I was given the drink to have at home then went to hospital for bloods two hours later

Stillgameforalaugh · 23/03/2018 08:39

You can turn down any test... but i wouldn't.
I had no markers... no family history, normal weight, no asian background, no sugar in urine. I had one as a result of a chance scan that showed baby was in a lot of fluid. Turns out I had undiagnosed gd. Baby was ok although she was big at 8lbs odd... babies run small in my family.
My next I had the one risk factor... pebble pregnancy... and was diagnosed at 8weeks.

I will get tested for diabetes annually from now on.... but my bmi is normal and no other factors so I'm hoping it's all ok.

bathandpjs I was told the results should be with my Midwife and survey in a couple
of days. My midwife came to my house a couple of weeks ago to do the GT test (One to One Midwife care so I get home visits) but I have terrible veins that are so hard to find so she asked me to go to the phlebotomy walk in. As for the Midwife unit birth, if you are under Midwife only care and don’t have a consultant then I’d assume you could give birth in the Midwife unit, if you have no other issues in your pregnancy. I think my BMI is 30-31 and no one has even mentioned it as a risk factor or even made reference to it. I don’t even remember being weighed at the booking appt. Ask at your next Midwife appointment.

I think most trusts are keen for as many births to be in Midwife unit as possible as it’s cheaper! If it weren’t for me wanting to be in the Midwife unit for birth I could go this whole pregnancy without setting foot in the hospital (Home visits from Midwife, my scans were at the doctors surgery, possible homebirth)

Ooh yes don't walk around during the test as you can lower the blood sugar reading that way. Which is good if you have GD and need to control it; not so good if you're wanting an accurate diagnosis.

It's a pain in the arse but it's really just sensible healthy eating which is better for you and baby. The hard part is sticking to a more sensible diet afterwards - GD is a clear wake up call, sadly for those of us with slightly crap genetics!!!!!!!

What drink did you guys have? Mine wasn't like Lucozade, it was Lucozade! Fresh from a mulitpack they had in the room. I treated them to a massive burp after drinking all that!!

Buglife · 23/03/2018 16:31

Some kind of diluted pure glucose syrup I think, they mixed it in plastic cups. I think because they need to measure it precisely? Wasn’t fizzy!

Mine was literally the Lucozade bottle with some poured out so that the amount left was accurate. It was fizzy, so quite difficult to just down!

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 24/03/2018 08:16

Lots of places used to use lucozade for the SGTT (drink it wait two hours, have your blood taken, as opposed to the OGTT which takes a blood sample at the start as well) mintich but lucozade contains less sugar now so they’ve had to stop!

Buxbaum · 24/03/2018 10:42

Yes, Lucozade contains sweeteners now (sugar tax) so it can’t be used for the GTT any more.
