I’m 26 weeks. Have an aweful killer headache for 48 hours. Can’t function. Doctor has prescribed codeine 60mg 4x a day. I’m worried it’ll harm the baby. Please tell me it’s ok? Head to bad to do proper research.

It's under medical advice so it's ok and used a lot - take your tablets, stay off Google and go rest up.

I was told by my midwife at the labour ward to take codeine based headache tablets if I was struck by bad headaches again ( after a migraine followed by a week of constant headaches) she did say it should only be used for really bad headaches (where normal paracetamol and keeping hydrated didn’t cure it after a day) I’m 24.5 weeks. The dr wouldn’t have prescribed it if it wasn’t safe xx

I had it for bad hip pain, it was fine.

My midwife prescribed my codeine throughout my entire pregnancy for arthritis in my spine. I took as instructed when needed and I now have a beautiful healthy baby girl who came out the day after her due date weighing a hefty 8lb 12oz lol. You will be fine. I hope you feel better soon x

Perfectly safe, but be careful codeine can cause rebound headaches

I’ve been given codeine pretty much throughout my whole pregnancy- first off to try and suppress a cough (unsuccessful) and then as I have broken a rib through coughing.

Several medical professionals- GP, pregnancy consultant, respiratory consultant and midwives have all said it is perfectly to take up to 240mg a day.

So I’d go with it. I hope it works for you 😊

I was prescribed codeine to control severe headaches. I told my GP that I was pregnant and he assured me it was perfectly safe to take.

Codeine Phosphate is fine however in late third trimester 37 weeks on and if wanting to breastfeed it is advised to change to dihydrocodeine.

Hi! I know you might not see this with it being an old thread, but how was baby after you give birth? I've been having to take Dihydrocodeine and was told we may have to stay in for monitoring for 72 hours after labour, which I really don't want, and I'm terrified of the baby being addicted, did your baby have any side effects atall? I'm down to 4 30mg tablets a day and I'm 39 weeks tomorrow. Wondering if to just stop completely but the pain is just excruciating!

Thank you in advance if you see this! Xx
