Did your growth scan results match your midwife bump measurement?

Hello, I'm exactely 29 weeks today and was measured by my midwife for the first time this morning. She said my bump is measuring 32 weeks and so she's arranging an immediate growth scan for in the next few days. For anyone who's had a growth scan, did it match the your result from your midwifes measurement? Thanks!

Not me but my friend - measured too small at 34 weeks so sent for a growth scan where it was decided that baby was, in fact, measuring too big...(!) They tried to convince her to be induced at 39 weeks but she stood her ground and they relented to inducing her at 40 weeks. She had a couple more scans where they reiterated that baby was large. She expected an absolute monster due to all their predictions and gave birth to a perfectly sized 8lb-er! This was last year.

Nope. My measurements jumped up for a few weeks, has a scan and all was fine, baby measuring normal. That was about 32 weeks I think? Come 38 weeks I was measuring normal again!

TonicAndTonic · 19/03/2018 13:43

Nope, I had a growth scan at 31 weeks for static growth (bump measured 28-29 weeks). Scan showed baby was bang on for dates and was just curled up in quite a tight ball! Mind you at the same time me had said he was breach and the growth scan 3h later showed he was decidedly head down Hmm

I had lots of growth scans, baby was always the right size for age while bump always measuring big. Both measures are notoriously inexact.

Where I work if the measurement is less than 3cm than your weeks you would be referred for a growth scan but not for more than 3cm unless they think there is excess fluid. You've measured 3 weeks ahead but only once so they might not go ahead with the growth scan

My midwife measured me a week ahead had a growth scan due to another issue and baby actually behind on growth, wouldn't go by fundal height at all

ForeverHopeful21 · 19/03/2018 14:15

I was measured small by the midwife but at my scan measured perfect for my dates. It all depends how baby is lying.

Both the Midwife and Sonographer said that tape measure bump measurements are not accurate and are often incorrect. But its better to have the scan and see whats actually going on in there.

If your scan shows that baby is bigger than your gestation and you continue to measure big throughout the coming weeks, they may discuss having the baby early.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 19/03/2018 14:18

Both preganacies did not match.
I measured small each time and had an extra 2 scans each time. One showing baby was just the right size and the other baby measuring slightly big. He was a bit bigger but arrived bang on time!
It's not an exact science, the scanwill give a better picture.

Smellyjo · 19/03/2018 15:02

I had similar large measurements to you at same stage and had 2 extra growth scans, 3cm ahead each time. The sonographers didn't hide their annoyance with the community midwives, saying that bump measurement is an inexact science and that it had been unnecessary to send me. Baby was 8lb exactly. But it meant extra chances to see baba was there happy and well so I wouldn't complain! Try not to worry about it - I know several people who had similarly inaccurate experiences with growth scans.

I was measuring 36cm at my 38 week appointment so got sent for a growth scan. The scan showed baby was measuring fine and back following the line it was on the growth chart. Been measured again today at 40 weeks and is still following the curve it was. So I think my 38 week measurement must have been to do with positioning.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 19/03/2018 15:22

Nope. Was measuring 4 weeks behind at 36 weeks having previously measured a week ahead. Was sent for a growth scan and baby was bang on 50th percentile. I personal don't think midwife measurements are very helpful. Surely your height place a part on how your bump grows as taller women have longer torsos to fit a baby in. Plus only put on baby weight and don't retain extra fluids whilst others do which again will have a bearing on your bump size.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 19/03/2018 15:29

Bump growth slowed so referred for scan. Baby measured huge at scan, wanted to section early etc. I refused as I felt she was just normal size, she was exactly the same weight as her brother had been.

With my 1st I had a growth scan quite late on (can’t remember exactly when) after the midwife felt I was measuring small. Sonogram estimated baby was over 7lb, when he was born a couple of weeks later he was just over 5lb.

I’m 29 weeks today too and was measuring at 30 last week when I saw the midwife. I also had a growth scan last week and they estimated the baby to be 3lb which at 28 weeks is above average.

Who knows?! I’ll be interested to see what size this baby comes out and whether the scans will be more accurate this time.

My bump was measuring small and my friend's was measuring big. Both of us has growth scans at both babies were measured perfect for dates. Around the 32 weeks
