metoclopramide? Am I taking it wrong?

Hello, I have been prescribed metoclopramide for morning sickness. I’m 9 weeks. I just don’t feel it’s helping and the internet advise that I have read says that it should only be taken for a maximum of 5 days. This morning I took it on an empty stomach and threw up. How can I eat then take it? Help!

I can't advise when to take it but when I tried the tablet forms I never kept them down long enough for them to work, no matter what I did. I had the ones that melted on your gums and they worked a lot better (but can't remember name of them)

They all work differently for different people, if it’s not working for you go back to the Gp and ask for something else. Promethazine is the likely next step I think. Metaclopramide made my heart race overtime, felt like an anxiety attack.

@timeisnotaline that sounds seriously unpleasant. I wanted them to prescribe Cyclizine but no luck. I might ask about the ones that melt tho @LRL2017.
I’m so happy I’m pregnant and managing to keep this one after 4 loses but I’m feeling so unwell I can’t imagine this is doing the poor baby any good.

I would have thought you had already tried cyclizine, I thought they suggested that first!!

I found free cyclizine better but the best by far was ondanestron. Literally the only thing that got me through my HG.

Metoclopramide also made me super anxious. I had it through an IV when I was hospitalised and my Mum who was with me said I became a completely different person - restless, jittery, a bit crazy. It was awful.

Definitely try other drugs if this one isn't working for you.

If it is not working go back or get a telephone appointment. It is all they gave me during my first pregnancy as I didn't know there were other option. This time I kept going back and trial and error showed ondansetron was the only thing to work.at 29 weeks I still need it do would have gone through a lot of avoidable sickness if I hadn't insisted.

Metachlopramide stopped me vomiting but the extrapyramidal side effects were so appalling I couldn’t continue with it for more than a day or two - the anxiety, twitchy limbs and racing heart were horrendous, and made me feel ten times worse. I’d say if you’re not able to keep it down, to stop taking it and return to the doctor - there are many different drugs, so if one isn’t working then move on.

I spent weeks persisting with prochloperazine and cyclizine, when they just weren’t working, and when I was finally prescribed one that worked for me (ondansetron in my case) it was like a switch going off. It’s considered second line for morning sickness, so my gp was keen to rule the other options out. Like PP, I’m still on it, albeit a reduced dose, at 29+ weeks. I feel for you, sickness in pregnancy is the worst, but I’m sure you’ll find something that helps.

Definitely go back to gp. I like cyclizine but it makes me super drowsy so I tolerate metoclopramide now well but I went through a stage were I couldn't keep anything down so needed injections of the antisickness in hospital for 24hours to get to a point where I could keep the antisickness tablets down.
