Sleeping bag or cellular blankets for newborn due late May?

I'm a FTM and our baby girl is due at the end of May. I'm not sure what to cover her in for night time sleeping. We have a few cellular blankets and was going to use them but I'm not sure if sleeping bags are better? Also, if I use cellular blankets, do I need a flat sheet as well? And are flat sheets breathable and safe?

Watching this thread with interest. First time Mum due in June and unsure too!

We had dd1in May. Started with cellular blankets, moved to swaddling when she was waking due to startling then sleeping bag when she was bigger. I’d say it’s go with cellular blankets until they aren’t working for you anymore. And get amazon prime if you don’t live near decent shops

Sleeping bags can only be used from 8lb13oz. You can get a newborn version call the gro snug, which can be used as a sleeping bag or part swaddle/part bag. We had one gro snug and used it as a sleeping bag so used to leave DS arms out. Some nights usually when he'd been sick not he gro snug we would just use cellular blankets but never used a flat sheet. HTH Flowers

I had one of these with dd2 from when she was about 2/3 months ish. Born late April. I wish I had got one in the newborn size, it was so useful. Cooler nights it went over a vest and sleepsuit and sometimes a cellular blanket too. Very warm nights she just had a vest and the sleeping bag.

It depends how warm it is. DD was born in an August heatwave and we just put her in a sleeveless vest and swaddled her in a large muslin, with arms out.

We swaddled with a giant muslin square. This was til about 4mo. Then sleeping bags til about 2.

I'd use a sleeping bag. Get 2 so you can wash one.

The gro snugs are good. DS has just outgrown them at 6wks and moved into 0-6m gro bags. He is big though, they'd last most babies longer than that.

Fitted bottom sheet . Flat top sheet tucked over a cotton cellular blanket.
Sleeping bags are ok for when they are bigger and wriggle out of the blankets

I had an early June baby and we used cellular blankets. We still use blankets now, in fact (DS is 9 months old). Sleeping bags do seem to be all the rage but DS has always perceived them as an escape challenge and become frustrated at not being able to wiggle free so they've not really worked for us!

Jenijena · 17/03/2018 19:25

My late may baby was wrapped in large muslins(it was very warm) for a while, and then into sleeping bags (but he was the right size for them to begin with).

blinkineckmum · 17/03/2018 19:25

Current advice is no sleeping bags for newborns. They can overheat or fall down inside them.

MayCatt · 17/03/2018 19:27

I had DS in May last year and cellular blankets were so incredibly useful. We then used a large muslin to swaddle but the main thing you need to be aware of is overheating so sleeping bags can be too much when they're very tiny. Great for when they're a little bit bigger though
