I’ve heard that really bad heartburn in pregnancy means that one could be having a hairy baby. Is it true? Comment below if you’ve had it and whether the baby was born hairy or not...Thanks

Apparently it is true.

Had bad heartburn with first, horrific with second, both born with lush heads of hair and 2 had more!

No it's a silly old wives tale that my MIL twittered on about for the entire duration of two pregnancies. First dc I suffered fairly badly with heartburn. Was told I was having a hairy baby repeatedly. Dc was born with minimal hair and didn't grow any significant hair until she was over 2. Second dc I had horrific heartburn. Baby was born with virtually no hair.

Yep first none at all and he was bald, next two shocking heartburn and hairy little things they were!!

My midwife genuinely said this was true Hmm. She was useless though!

Incidentally I had chronic heart burn and a baby with a full head of hair.

Had terrible heartburn and DD was born with a full head of blonde hair and it hasn’t fallen out. DD also had hair on her back and arms like a tiny hairy monkey.

Awful heartburn both times requiring prescription meds in order to sleep. Two bald babies, DD has still only had one haircut aged 4.

I had awful heartburn during the third trimester. DD had hardly any hair when she was born (and still doesn't at 10 months).

Had heartburn so bad with 1st pregnancy that I've lost my molars and thought I was gonna give birth to Chewbacca 🤣🤣🤣

This time round none yet but a really bad sore throat

Heartburn in pregnancy which is also referred to as acid reflux is a burning sensation that runs from the breastbone to the lower throat of the expectant mother. It is a harmless thing that makes pregnant mothers uncomfortable. Now before I look at some of the causes, let me start by saying that it has nothing to do with having a hairy baby. This is a myth which is not true and does not have any scientific backing. Heartburns comes with other related issues such as bloating, and gas that comes at the start and during the third trimester. It may come and go and come again after some time. Typically, heartburn is caused by hormonal and physical changes during pregnancy. It may result from the fact that the placenta produces the hormone progesterone that relaxes and smooths the muscles of the uterus. The hormone makes the valve that separates the esophagus and the stomach to relax making the gastric acid seep back and cause a burning sensation. Also, production of progesterone makes digestion to slow down causing the contraction of the intestine and esophagus. Also, when the growing baby crowds the abdominal cavity it pushes the acid back into your esophagus. This results in heartburn. However, when it happens, one should seek ways to relieve it. The first thing they should do is to avoid food and drinks that trigger it. Carbonated drinks, caffeine, and alcohol should be avoided. Also, vinegar, tomatoes, juices, citrus fruits should be avoided. Also, the mother should eat small meals and should drink plenty of water in between the meals.

Awful heartburn with dc2; I was getting Gavsiscon free on prescription and swigging it straight from the bottle on my bedside table!

Baby was born with a shock of thick dark hair (he then got cradle cap and it all fell.out Sad)

There is possibly a small association actually :)

Of course it’s not 100% correlation but there was a small study done that found a positive association.

Awful indigestion with both. Both had mops of hair (DD1 also has a hairy back!)

Chienrouge · 17/03/2018 07:43

Horrific heartburn with both. 2 babies who were practically bald until a year old.

mummmyj · 17/03/2018 07:52

No it does not.. I had very bad heartburn all the way through and my DD came out with a little hair on top

AssumethePerpendicular · 17/03/2018 08:01

One baby with lots and lots of hair (on his head!) but no heartburn. But I get asked this question all the time!

doleritedinosaur · 17/03/2018 08:05

Had it loads, every day & baby didn’t have hair until 6 months ago, he just turned 3.
