Can I move hospitals?

Hello - can anyone advise? I'd like to change hospitals to another (still within my catchment area). Is this possible? Do I need to speak to my GP?

Any advice greatly appreciated...

Magnolia - As long as new hosp happy to take you shouldn't be a problem. I changed at 14 weeks. Maybe best thing is to speak to the new hosp and see what they need from you and if you can book yourself or if you need a GP letter.

Hi,
For my last birth, almost 3 years ago now, I changed at 37/38 weeks.
From memory I didn't go through my GP. I think I just phoned the new hospital direct, explained that I was thinking of switching and asked to look round their maternity unit before making up my mind.
They showed me round, told me to bring my notes and arranged the next appointments.
I wouldn't leave it as late as me, but there were no problems at all and I was changing health areas.
I recall someone saying that it wasn't unusual as some women move closer to their mothers for the birth etc.

apparently we are all supposed to be offered a choice of hospitals at our booking in appointment - anyone actually had that experience??
I would imagine you could just turn up for the actual birth anywhere you wanted to but I guess you mean to get your antenatal checks and stuff done there as well?

I did it at 42 weeks! Was due to be at a birth centre but they couldn't take me after 42 weeks so had to go to a hospital instead!

Morocco, I had a 'choice' both times;

With ds1: 'you can go to x or y, but x is under refurb, so they're not taking any more women on'

With ds2 'you can go to x or y'
'great, I'd like x'
Appointment for scan and booking in comes, from y.

lol mrm
I was offered a choice

to answer the question usually you can move as long as they are still taking people on, GP as good a place to start as any other!

I was offered a choice at my first m/w appointment (which I didn't have until 16 weeks ) but this was only because we live halfway between 2 hospitals.

I'm 25 weeks and still haven't decided which one I prefer! (but I am booked into one of these) My mw told me I could change at anytime up to the last moment but I am going to make a decision soon.

It's actually a lot harder when you're faced with a choice especially when you've heard good things about both...

Babylovesmuffins · 08/05/2007 16:51

Also meant to add that I got the impression I would just need to speak to the m/w in order to change hospitals and not my GP...

Thanks everyone for the replies!
I'm seeing my GP tomorrow to ask about the process for moving - hopefully it won't be a problem!

Hi
I was given a choice of 4 hospitals. The only problem it was at my first doc appt when I was 4 weeks pregnant! Didn't have a blooming clue! Mind you- I do like the hospital I chose so that was lucky! I guess I could have changed if I'd wanted to.
