Weird baby movements - quivering tummy

I'm 28 weeks pregnant with baby number 3. Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed some really strange movements from my baby which I have never had before, either with this pregnancy or my previous pregnancies. My tummy will suddenly start quivering/shaking for about 10 seconds and will then go back to normal.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea what is going on in there? My slightly irrational fear is that she is having some kind of seizure in there, but I'm really hoping someone will come along and tell me that this is completely normal and nothing to worry about...?

Could it be Braxton Hicks? My bump goes tight for 20/30 seconds and then softens. If you are concerned though I would contact your community midwife or any of the emergency contacts on your notes.

I don't think I've ever had Braxton Hicks, but from my understanding they feel a bit like faux-contractions, is that right? I don't feel any discomfort when this quivering happens....it just feels and looks a bit strange. I do have a midwife appointment this week so I will raise it with her but I just wondered if anyone here could put my mind at ease.

If it's baby number 3 for you then raise it - you know how the other 2 felt.

I don't want to scaremonger but my friend's little boy was having seizures, as he was her first she only realised with hindsight.

I had this about 30 mins ago. I also had it with my previous pregnancy. I think it might be hiccups? Although I'm not convinced

CoffeeChocolateWine · 14/03/2018 12:19

It's not hiccups. I recognise hiccups...the movements are futher apart and kind of rhythmical. This is very different. Thank you for responding all of you.

I had this with my second!! It felt like the baby was having a seizure. It got so bad and happened so often i mentioned it to the midwife who completely dismissed it.
Pleased to say he was born with no problems at all :)

CoffeeChocolateWine · 14/03/2018 12:44

Thanks weasledee, that's comforting to hear. I will still mention it to the midwife, but it's good to hear that your midwife was completely unworried by it and baby has no problems.

You're the only other person I've heard describe it just how I felt it!! Everyone thought I was mad at the time Smile

pickleface · 14/03/2018 13:15

Sounds very like my braxton hicks. I had them constantly with all 3 of mine.

spacepoodle · 14/03/2018 13:47

I had this with my first - I used to describe it as vibrating! He had no problems when born whatsoever, just a ridiculously strong moro reflex and arms that wouldn't stop waving about!

Ellapaella · 14/03/2018 14:03

I had exactly this with baby number 3! It was so strange. I remember thinking how odd it was. Like a shuddering sensation. I never did find out what it was.

Ellapaella · 14/03/2018 14:05

He's fine though so I'm sure it's nothing to worry about op.

DappledThings · 14/03/2018 16:32

I had this the first time. Best explanation I heard was that it was a nerve being briefly pressed on and vibrating so it is actually you and not the baby. Made sense to me.

Whitelisbon · 14/03/2018 16:37

I had that with dd1. It happened during a scan once, and she was stretching her arms out in front of her and rubbing them down the inside of my womb, with her fingers spread.
It was a horrible sensation, so glad none of the others did it.

abstractblueish · 14/03/2018 16:44

Yes!!!!! Like vibrations. I drove myself mad worrying about it. Ds is now born - he still does it! It’s a lip quiver / shiver, they’re just practicing in the womb. Don’t worry!

ShowOfHands · 14/03/2018 16:48

There's a thread on here every so often with the same query. Always a vibrating bump lasting 10 or 20 seconds or so, always a suggestion of hiccups (it isn't) and other women saying OMG that happens to me. The op usually worries it could be a seizure.

In my 15 years on MN nobody has definitively answered what it is, only that it happens and never has a poster found it indicative of a problem.

I think you can file it under Pregnancy Is Weird.

AutumnalTed · 14/03/2018 17:20

I had this, my midwife told me the baby had a cramp. Not sure if this is right, but makes sense.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 14/03/2018 18:50

Showofhands, that so funny...I’ve never come across a similar thread before, but I guess if you’re not pregnant you don’t tend to look on the pregnancy board! But it is a comfort to know that it’s not unusual to come across this query! And all the happy ending stories from other poster are helping ease my mind too so thanks everyone who replied.

I think I have had the same thing - very weird

I reckon the baby is shaking a limb, a bit like you’d shake your hand to flick something off of it (does that makes sense?) or doing that sort of juddery stretch

Have also worried about seizures etc but seems to come up regularly with lots of people who have had babies with no problems experiencing it

namechange5000 · 14/03/2018 18:55

I had it. Felt like a mobile phone vibrating. Was very odd. Remember googling it and it’s common but no-one seems to know the cause!
