AIBU to expect a scan when I was promised one @ 10 weeks

Hello!
I don't know whether to be annoyed or not.
I had an early scan at 6 weeks because they suspected ectopic. Happy ending it wasn't ectopic but I was a mess anyway and told the sister I'd had a previous miscarriage at 9 weeks.
She said not to worry, to call up at 10 weeks and they'd book me in for a 10 week scan and then I'd go on to my 12 week scan.
I had my booking in appointment today and the midwife called the EPAU who said no early scans. They made out I'd misunderstood or misheard but my DP was there who was under the same impression as me.
Now my option is to go to my GP to see if they would refer me for a 10 week scan but I've already been promised it. I just feel really frustrated with the whole thing! I know two weeks shouldn't make a huge difference but the 10 week scan was really calming my nerves.

My trust only offers early scans (without bleeding or pain etc) for ladies who have have 3 misscarrages or more.

It’s possible the sister made a mistake in telling you you’d get an early scan again. Also at my trust even with early scans due to multiple miscarriage I was told I’d only be given a scan as and when they could fit me in due to it not being an official thing / depending on how busy the EPU is at the time

Maybe best to speak to the GP hopefully they can refer you.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 12/03/2018 16:35

It is really frustrating that she gave you incorrect information, but my local EPU wouldn't do an early scan under these circumstances either - I only got offered one after three previous miscarriages. Is going for a private scan an option?

Rumpledfaceskin · 12/03/2018 16:38

Same here. You’d never get an early scan unless there was bleeding/suspected eptopic, are you sure she didn’t mean they’d book you in for 12 weeks scan when you hit 10 weeks? Bacuse that can be done anywhere from 11 to about 13 weeks for optimal measurements I think.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 12/03/2018 16:39

I’m really sorry OP, it’s horrible going through those first few months when you’ve had a miscarriage. I think unfortunately whilst they’ve communicated poorly, you probably won’t be able to get another scan before 12 weeks. It’s not common to have scans on the NHS unless there is a reason for it (bleeding etc) and now that they have confirmed it’s not an ectopic pregnancy there isn’t much of a medical reason to scan again until the normal dating scan. With the NHS currently struggling you can see why they can’t afford to do reassurance scans.

I know it must be really disappointing and frustrating for you though and I completely understand why, if you’d be promised it. I’d be very annoyed. Would it be possible for you to book a private scan?

I think it's pretty standard to only be offered reassurance scans if you've had 3 or more previous miscarriages. I know it's frustrating when different people have told you different things but can you not book a private scan?

Rumpledfaceskin · 12/03/2018 16:42

For me the 60 odd quid it cost to have a private early scan after a MC was worth it to put mind a rest a little. I couldn’t bare the thought of waiting the full 12 weeks especially as my 1st pregnancy was lost the day before my 12 week scan. You will probably still be worrying though!

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 12/03/2018 16:42

Unfortunately some Drs & nurses will tell patients what they want to hear - especially if they will not be responsible for delivering on those promises (I work in A&E and get this frequently)

Girlwiththearabstrap · 12/03/2018 16:48

I really sympathise with the anxiety. It's horrible. I'd be frustrated in your situation too.

However where I am you don't automatically get offered am early scan where there's no clinical need - ie no reassurance scans. Is it possible that the sister meant you'd get booked in at 10 weeks, and they'd organise your 12 week scan then, rather than 2 separate scans?

booandbumpp · 12/03/2018 16:49

@Rumpledfaceskin no she definitely said a scan @ 10 weeks and then again @ 12 weeks. I just asked my partner to double check myself and he said that's what she definitely said.

I would understand her saying something just to placate me but when she told me this I'd actually calmed down as we had found out everything was ok. I really wasn't expecting it.
I just don't like the hospital thinking I made it up I guess.
I actually work in the NHS and worked in a maternity hospital as admin so I know generally what's standard and what's not. And if I'd never been offered it I would be waiting for 12 weeks or looking into private scan.
I actually cancelled my private scan when they offered me the 10 weeks so I guess I'll be going down that route again! Like i said, I think I'm just frustrated!

Please don't involve your GP about a reassurance scan, without wishing to be horrible we're snowed under doing our actual job. It'll probably need to be private or wait for 12 weeks.

booandbumpp · 12/03/2018 16:51

@Girlwiththearabstrap no definitely not she said two separate scans as the midwife is now organising my 12 week scan and my 12 week scan is at a different hospital to where the 10 week scan would have been x

booandbumpp · 12/03/2018 16:52

@pigshavecurlytails that wasn't my idea that's what the midwife suggested. I should have prefaced this with I work for the NHS in management and am well aware of the current pressures that we are under and do not want to contribute to it.

Can you call the EPU yourself and ask to speak to the sister you originally spoke to? Maybe if u speak to her directly then you can sort it out with her.

booandbumpp · 12/03/2018 16:55

@Bluebirdsky I've spoken to them and they basically said she didn't say it and I'm discharged and to go to my GP so they weren't really helpful

OP, we paid for private reassurance scans at 6 and 9 weeks. Expensive but it's did reassure us and it was lovely to see the baby in such a relaxed atmosphere. We then waited for the standard NHS 12 and 20 week scans.

Unless there is bleeding or you've had a knock etc, my hospital won't scan you. So maybe have a look into private scans to ease your mind?

Massive congrats on the baby!! [Flowers]

Pinkvoid · 12/03/2018 17:01

They don’t do reassurance scans at my local EPAU unless you are bleeding or have had three or more previous miscarriages. I had two MMC last year and the second one had zero symptoms of MC at all, literally just found out at the 12 week scan which was horrible. I’m considering paying for a private scan at ten weeks so I don’t have to get to the 12 week scan with all the hopes of it being ok and find out it’s not again.

surreygirl1987 · 12/03/2018 19:57

I had a scan at 5 weeks for suspected ectopic and all was fine. Afterwards I was randomly offered a scan to have at 7 weeks. I was surprised as didn't expect that but very pleased. I have no previous pregnancies/miscarriages. I don't know what's 'standard but I do know what I was offered! I also paid for a scan privately 2 or three weeks later. I agree that it sounds like they said one thing then retracted it, but honestly is it worth the hassle of fighting it? There are groupon vouchers for cheap early scans all across the country...
