If I've lost one to a trisomy condition before what are the chances of another one being affected?

I'm 14 weeks and have had 5 previous pre-12 week miscarriages. The last one was tested and had t22 meaning it would never have gone past 12 weeks.

Our nuchal fold test came back as 1:998 for downs and 1:10000 for pataus/Edwards so low risk however because of the previous loss the consultant seems to think our trisomy risk is higher and is heavily suggesting an amnio or going private for a harmony test.

Does anyone know of risks of different trisomy disorders if you've lost one to one already?

Were you not offered genetic counselling after your loss?
So sorry you are going through this.
Awful to have to be asking this question once you are already pregnant.

No. It's been a monumental fuck up from the hospital from day one in all honesty

I'm not sure if it is the same everywhere but at my hospital if you've had a chromosomal defect in a previous pregnancy then they automatically do the NIPT test at the same time as they do the 12 week standard tests. Was this mentioned to you?

I think in terms of it happening again it all depends on whether the condition is because of the genes passed on by you and your partner or whether it was one of those random but awful things. In our case we had karyotyping done (privately) after losing our dd due to a lethal skeletal dysplasia. Her condition turned out to be due to a random genetic abnormality and not passed on by us. Had either of us carried the gene then the chances were something like 1 in 4 of it happening again.

Could you give the charity ARC a call? They might be able to give you some advice. I found them great in the past.

No further testing was discussed at the 12 week scan - and I mentioned we had previously had a trisomy loss before.

We had karyotype testing done as part of our recurrent miscarriage investigations and these came back as both of us are genetically fine. I'm taking this to mean the chromosomal issues were flukes.

Who are ARC?

Not sure if the situation is the same however, whilst trying for DC2, we had a Trisomy 12 loss and were told that it was a fluke occurrence which was unlikely to happen again. It was my 3rd miscarriage (no fetal
testing was done on first 2 losses though as they occurred a lot earlier on) and we then went on to have a healthy baby girl :-). This said, I did pay for NIPT (at St George’s Hospital) to check for Downs and Edwards. Please let me know if you would like any more details as I know how worrying it can be. Big hugs x

Ps in london they def don’t offer NIPT if you’ve had a chromosomal issue in a prior pregnancy, only if the 12 week combined testing comes up as high risk in your current pregnancy ( hence why I paid for NIPT at 10 weeks - worth every penny for the peace of mind...)

I'm in London Miki and they definitely do offer the NIPT irrespective of risk level at my hospital - it's literally just happened to me. Must differ by trust.

ARC is Antenatal Results and Choices. They have a helpline you can call or an online community. I don't know if they'd be able to help but might be worth a call to see if they can offer any advice.

Good to know WelshMummy, it's so strange the way it differs from one hospital to another even within the same city! No one seemed even remotely interested in my past trisomy when I brought it up (however maybe likelihood of reoccurrence differs based on the affected chromosome??)
