I'm only 4 weeks pregnant and not sure of the process in my area for booking the first midwife appointment so will have to phone up the GP to ask how to go about it all, am I better to wait a couple of weeks to get the ball rolling or phone up ASAP? Thanks !

No harm in calling the surgery and asking the process; if you need to call back in a couple of weeks I am sure they will let you know.

I think most midwives like to see you between 8-10 weeks for booking in. No harm in calling now and making an appointment for that sort of time. Some midwives are really busy so better to get something booked in advance

At my surgery, they see you for booking in at 8/9 weeks, I had to make my appointment as soon as I found out as the waiting times meant that the first appointment will be when I’m almost 9 weeks. Definitely jus5 give them a call soon.

In my area you self refer online and then receive your booking in appointment via the post

I self referred online at 6 weeks, which is the earliest i coukd do it, and got an appointment at approx 8 weeks. They're usually at between 8-10 weeks but I've heard of some booking in appointment being a little later.

Contacted GP at 3+5, over the phone appointment with community midwife at 4 weeks and then they lost my referral paperwork and sent it to the wrong hospital. I self referred at 5-6ish weeks.

Thanks for all replies! Phoned GP today and they booked me into the midwife next week who will then book my booking appointment for the hospital, they also said I can go in anytime to pick up an early pregnancy pack? Does anyone know what this is?

I rang my GP the day after finding out, when I was five weeks pregnant. They told me to come down and collect a maternity pack which included a contact number for my local midwives, several leaflets all about healthy eating and what screening tests you have throughout pregnancy, ect.

I was told to ring up the midwife number and arrange an appointment. I did, and was given an appointment for when I was eight weeks pregnant, so I had to wait three weeks. That was three weeks ago; my first midwife appointment is on Wednesday! Most midwives will want to see you between 8-10 weeks pregnant unless you've had problems with previous pregnancies, in which case they may want to see you earlier. From what I've read the first appointment is just a load of form filling and answering questions!

Good luck! Grin

I rang at 6 wks and was told to collect a pack. It just has information leaflets in and the number to book an app with the midwife. My appointment isn't until I am 10 wks.
I think they take blood at the appointment. Does anyone know if you have to provide a urine sample?
