Baby name - am I concerned for no reason?

We picked a name for baby a long time ago (about 2 years ago! Before we even started T2C)
Since then my SILs sister has had a baby with the shortened version of the name.
We love the name Oliver.
She has a baby called Olly
Should we rethink Oliver because it will be confusing for my SILs children to have 2 cousins with similar names?
Or should we just go with it and make sure when we are all together (not often) that we refer to ours as Oliver not Ollie?
I don't want to change the name but I feel like I should because of it.

Don't change the name, it's not exactly a close relative to you and even if it were you are still perfectly entitled to use it.

The fact of the matter is that Oliver is one of the most popular names at the moment, and your DC's will encounter many in their lives, so one more isn't going to hurt.

Pfft, I wouldn’t change it. It’s a very common name and they will all meet tonnes of Olivers and Ollies.

I wouldn't change the name either. Maybe if Sil had used the name I would have changed it, but not because her sister has Smile

I wouldn't change it either. I've had a boys name picked for years just in case I ever had children. I don't know the sex of the baby. But partner hates the name. I looked at lists of other names but it's really hard to move away from a name that you have wanted for so long.

No, my SIL has a niece on her side of the family with the same name as a niece on our side of the family. No shortened versions...exactly the same name. It's a non-issue.

PinkAvocado · 09/03/2018 11:33

It is hardly confusing to have similarly named cousins, especially when the two with the similar names aren’t even related!

Oysterbabe · 09/03/2018 11:34

SIL's sister, nah I wouldn't worry.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 09/03/2018 11:34

And I'm pregnant with DC3 (a girl) at the moment and one of the names on my shortlist is the same as another niece on her side of the family (although shortenings will be different). I don't even consider it to be a problem.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 09/03/2018 11:35

I would if it was SIL, definitely not with her sister!

FreshNewUserName · 09/03/2018 11:35

DD has the exact same name as her cousins' cousin. They just call them by first and surname. It isn't a problem at all.

BertieBotts · 09/03/2018 11:38

Don't worry about it. You end up with children with similar names when families come together through marriage etc all the time.

They'll have different nicknames and even if not, Olly B and Olly N or big Olly/little Olly isn't exactly difficult to work out :)

Pumpkin2018 · 09/03/2018 12:53

I wouldn't change it. I have 2 cousins both called Laura one on each side of the family and it never confused me.
