AIBU to take a sick day tomorrow

I'm just exhausted.

I'm 6 weeks pregnant, sickness has started but not so bad that I would need to take a day off just for that. But I am exhausted. I can't focus on anything for more than 5 minutes without zoning out. My DD has chicken pox and has been up crying for the past 2 nights and looking like it's going the same way tonight too. I don't know if I can cope with a full day of work on top of 3 nights little sleep, morning sickness and pregnancy fatigue. I just feel horrendous.

AIBU to consider calling in? My boss is aware I am pregnant.

Thanks for your messages and your support everyone!

My LO actually managed to get some sleep last night so I did too and feel a little better so made it into work. I still feel ridiculously tired and permanently nauseous but at least I managed more than 2 hours last night.

And no, i can't just take annual leave whenever I feel like it unfortunately, otherwise I would.

YABU. You're pregnant, not ill. Fatigue is perfectly normal, as is some nausea. I know of several people who've had to rush out and throw up between patients/clients - they had non sleeping children at home and had no other choice.
I'm not saying be a martyr, but you're only six weeks in and being tired is likely to last the duration.

Signora. Well aware, done it twice before.

I personally wouldn't call in, it's the weekend tomorrow. Have a chill day with your kids with Disney movies and snoozes on the couch

And FYI I did actually make it into work. And yes I know pregnancy is not an 'illness' but it presents symptoms very similar to those from certain illnesses which renders you unable to function properly at work for example.

That phrase should stay in the 1950s.

lj & farmer I've been fighting it for a couple days now. I only work friday and saturdays and was feeling somewhat better last night, hence the comment of MAYBE staying off. On my way to work now Smile

This is why you have protected sick time when you’re pregnant! Next time, if you feel you need to, just take the day off and feel no guilt. Why make life harder? I forced myself into work with a cold, after being up all night with 2 sick kids while pregnant and ended up taken into hospital that afternoon with blood pressure through the roof. No need to make yourself feel worse!

Being that tired is not likely to last the duration. That crippling exhaustion some women experience in their first trimester is not the same as a bit tired.

I argue that women who say ‘get on with it,’ have been lucky enough to simply experience tiredness, while the women who need to take time out from their daily life are experiencing exhaustion.

Amen!

@Farmerswife36 it's a long way down from that high horse you're sat on.......

OP I've only been sick 3 times but the nausea is that bad that I'm on anti sickness meds and can't function without them, so yes I would have taken the day off lovely x

CRZ1988 · 09/03/2018 09:58

OP, would you be feeling so bad if you were not pregnant. Would you be able to cope with DD being sick if you weren;t pregnant.

If you feel that you'd be able to cope if you weren't pregnant then the pregnancy is causing your tiredness.

Nobody would thank you if you dragged yourself to work tired AF and made a bad mistake that could end up causing someone an injury or costing your company money.

Pregnancy related fatigue is real and you need to rest. If you can afford to take the AL then take it but otherwise call in sick.

But talk to your boss, explain whats going on. If they're really interested in your well being they'll understand. Also, bosses don't have to count your sickness days. They have the choice to give you a day off and not count it as sickness. Its at their discretion. Not may people are aware of this.

I find the number of women on here saying that 'you are pregnant not ill' really depressing and sad. That sort of attitude is not helpful. OP if you are not feeling well take the day off sick, your health and wellbeing and that of your baby is far more important than work. Hope you start to feel better.

Completly agree Hongkong!!! Tiredness in pregnancy made me so so poorly!!! I've had loads of time off but I can't help it!!xxx
