Hi girls I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant and have been suffering like mad with UTIS since coming pregnant. I never get any symptoms tho 😩 so I feel I've had a water infection for a few weeks now has anyone else experienced this? And how long was it left untreated? Was baby ok. ? Everything is getting to me now.

Why are you leaving it untreated?

As soon as you suspect a UTI get yourself down to the GP to drop off a sample (they often don't even need an appointment) or call your midwife to arrange giving them a sample.

It'll take a few days to come back if you just drop off a sample and then you can start on antibiotics straight away.

Definitely see your doctor. An untreated uti can quickly spread to the kidneys, which is excruciating and may require hospital stay if you need strong iv antibiotics. Hope you’re better soon

DrCoconut · 07/03/2018 19:27

What kitty said. A UTI that's spread is sheer misery.

UTIs can cause preterm labour. Get yourself to GP.

I don't understand how you can know you've got UTIs but have no symptoms.

toxitears181 · 07/03/2018 20:45

I have already took my sample to the doctors due to multiple urine infections previously ! I have zero symptoms so thought I would go to the doctors to get checked out the other day and I'm due to take amoxicillin tomorrow I just wanted to know other people's stories!

I am definitely not leaving it untreated

This just seems really irresponsible. Have you had your urine tested? You have a confirmed uti? Then take the medicine. Don’t leave untreated. It causes preterm labour. It’s a silly risk to take

toxitears181 · 07/03/2018 22:14

@Ubercornsdiscoball why would I leave it untreated? 🤔 I am simply asking if other people have had the same experience as me? I am taking amoxicillin tomorrow... I am trying to explain by having zero symptoms it has gone undetected without me knowing until I went to the doctors for a different issue and they tested my urine whilst there and told me

If you haven't had any symptoms you probably haven't had it very long so I wouldn't worry.

ugghhreally · 08/03/2018 08:26

Please go back to gp it is essential this is taken seriously. I hate to sound dramatic but untreated uti's in pregnancy can trigger early labour (not advice from google, but from advice given to me by a consultant urologist and head if obstetrics at my hospital).

ugghhreally · 08/03/2018 08:30

Meant to say I have had the same issue of no symptoms followed by sporadic symptoms months later over a 2 year period, but not whilst pregnant, which is why when I was pregnant they were keen to monitor.

Steeley113 · 08/03/2018 08:42

You mean they are treating an asymptomatic UTI? That’s not normally policy, they usually wait until you have symptoms. But still, unless you had active symptoms, I wouldn’t worry about it being left ‘untreated’.

charley39 · 08/03/2018 10:03

I was put onto antibiotics three times during pregnancy and everytime it was only picked up due to routine appointment checks. Only became symptomatic on one occasion.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 08/03/2018 19:59

Some odd responses on here. OP,
It's quite clear that you:

. had a UTI detected during sample screening
. Weren't aware of the UTI because it was asymptomatic
. Now have antibiotics to treat UTI but are worried that you may have had it for a few weeks.

I had an asymptomatic UTI detected in my urine sample last week and have been prescribed amoxicillin too which I've started today. Then I have to give a sample every week for the rest of my pregnancy and I'm only 7 weeks!

I don't think having a UTI for a few weeks will harm your baby.

Owlettele · 08/03/2018 20:02

I accidentally had one untreated as hosp didnt pick it up or treat me for it and i went on holiday for a week. Symptoms ramped up when home and went back to hosp. Next time i recognised it and forced them to treat straight away.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 08/03/2018 20:02

You mean they are treating an asymptomatic UTI? That’s not normally policy, they usually wait until you have symptoms.

I highly doubt this is the case - especially for pregnant women. Infections don't have to be symptomatic to be problematic.

toxitears181 · 09/03/2018 07:32

Thanks @BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy I'm so glad someone else understands what I'm going through xx

Please try not to worry about this, without boring you with the details I've had some many water infections during this pregnancy, been catheterised for weeks on end (more than once) and have had 3 different types of antibiotics!

I'm 38 weeks tomorrow and everything is looking good. I think Ive had a few that went untreated for a while. The important thing is you are getting it sorted out now

WednesdayAddams2525 · 09/03/2018 08:17

Oh and sorry just to clarify having the catheter jn wasn't a result of the UTI, but it did cause a UTI for me while the bag was on. Didn't want you to think that was normal, I've got a totally unrelated condition.

I just wanted to highlight that it's not all doom and gloom, I've had lots of UTI and antibiotics and baby is fine and not to worry!

holycheeseplant · 09/03/2018 11:10

I felt symptoms of a uti but my wee was clear around 17 weeks. After 2 days it was clear I had a full blown uti. By the 4th day, a day after starting the antibiotics I was feeling extremely ill and saw an emergency dr. (Uncontrollable high temp, aching skin, very fast heart rate.) By the time I saw him in the afternoon I had begun to feel better but he did say the symptoms I'd had in the morning were a step before septicaemia.

So never take it lightly.

toxitears181 · 09/03/2018 13:30

Thanks @WednesdayAddams2525 that makes me feel much better c
