Hi ladies, I'm driving myself mad here and can't find any answers. So I have my 12 week scan, baby number 2. I have been told that a lot of blood vessels have been seen in between placenta and uterus and I may have placenta accreta. Have to go back at 26 weeks to check. HOWEVER, the doctor had said that it only tends to happen to women who have had ceserian or any surgery to uterus (I've had none) they said it could be that I don't even have it. Has anyone had this? I am shitting myself, I hate waiting also, can anyone help Xxx

Placenta accreta is when the placenta sticks to an old C section scar. It happens when you have placenta previa and an anterior placenta. It is quite a serious condition in that it needs a C section and a skilled surgeon. I would ask for more answers.

That's exactly how I thought it happens but I've never had a c section or any surgery to make a scar? Unless I have it without having any of those? It's just doesn't make sense, I have to wait till 26wrrks to see if it's gone as it will be clearer for them to detect, I hate waiting 😩 Xxx

OP it will be looked at again at your 20 weeks scan. Maybe 26 weeks is significant in diagnosing accreta but your placenta will be checked again between 18-21 weeks during the anomalie scan. X

If after your anomaly scan is completed and they suspect the placenta is near your c section scar they should then do an MRI can as this is the best way to evaluate for acreta. Your at low risk of it due to no uterine surgery’s. Are you in UK? This is not something that would generally be commented on at a dating scan.

Perhaps they meant placenta praevia, when the placenta covers the cervix? You can only have placenta acreta when you have an existing scar for the placenta to invade

Loosemoose28 · 07/03/2018 23:37

Placenta accreta can exist without scar tissue its just that scarring is a known risk factor.

At 12 weeks your placenta is not yet fully formed or fully embedded. Was the scan an NHS one? Most scans at 12 weeks don’t have any comment made on them as its too early to see anything.

Have you had a miscarriage with erpc or termination before? That can cause uterine scarring also

AMSxxx · 08/03/2018 09:17

Yes based in UK and yes with NHS. Never had a miscarriage or termination or etopic. No not placenta Previa either, the fully explained that my placenta may have really inbedded itself into my uterus which is called accreta. The doctor said it's been picked up on a lot of women and has cleared by 26 weeks, I just want to know if anyone has been through this, just a shock because my last pregnancy was so easy with no complications x

I had an accreta pregnancy last year. It was noted very early on that I had previa and an anterior placenta close to my old c section scar, but the accreta was not confirmed until much later with a specialist scan. I delivered early at around 36 weeks and spent around a week in hospital. It was hard and there was a lot of blood loss but the hospital were amazing and are used to dealing with the condition so they had a specialist surgeon and everything in place. Not picking it up in advance is when it can be very dangerous.
