Changing maternity leave for induction.

I had planned to work up till 39 weeks but baby has been growing rapidly. At my scan last Wednesday it was said that I'd probably go into labour at 38 weeks but if not then I'll have a sweep next Wednesday and induced at 39+1 (so the day after my maternity leave was due to start).

I told my boss this last Wednesday and the fact I'd certainly need to be off work from next Wednesday onwards and that this would affect the planned parent interviews I was supposed to do then. Today though I saw on the school newsletter that she'd put the same date for me to start ML and for my parent interviews.

Had MW appointment after school and she said I should go on ML from this Friday but I don't know how to make this happen. I've read up on it and you have to give 28 days notice of a change of ML. Do I need a doctor to sign me off?

Yes, get signed off for pregnancy related issues and your maternity leave will start at that point.

So I have to make an appointment with a doctor? It's hard to get an appointment.

Ring them and ask?

Ring the midwives to explain the situation. My GP would sort this out for me without an appointment. The midwives may be able to help.

Btw you don't need to organise it in advance. Just call in sick and say it's for pregnancy related issues. Can you self certify for a few days? If so that might be enough for them to kick start your maternity.

As an employer this would hit me hard but as someone who went into labour at 35 weeks, it can't be helped! Shit happens your employer will cope.

Your priority is your own health. If you're able to self-cert until you can see your GP then do so.

Good luck with the birth of your baby 💐

Now that you’re past 36 weeks any pregnancy-related absence will trigger mat leave. IME the onus is on the pregnant employee to prove that the absence is not pregnancy related. If your school request proof then you can contact MW or GP for written confirmation.

During my HR meeting I was told that the 28 day notice was more about payroll and making sure that you would get paid the right amount for that month. However, they know full well that babies come earlier than expected and pregnancies can have complications so you can start ML now with minimal notice- it just means your salary might be a bit screwy this month, but they will sort it out.

Nervously went to speak to her this morning and she was fine! She just said that you can't always expect things to go to plan with babies and that either the parents could meet the new teacher or she'd speak with them to discuss reports. Only thing is she was out the rest of the day and not told parents yet so still have them trying to book appointments!
