One of my friends is pregnant, due in June, and I would like to get her a few bits that she will genuinely love and find useful. Could any parents please share with me what items you were really pleased you had, during the third trimester of pregnancy and the first year or so of parenting?

I agree with a basket of medicines/cold remedies etc. Snuffle babe, saline drops, calpol plug in, dentinox or infacol, calpol, teething powder, nappy rash cream etc. All things that required a mad dash to the chemist when baby first got a cold/teething/nappy rash.
I also found a nose Frieda absolutely invaluable, it’s gross but it certainly works.
Big muslin squares and muslins in general are a huge yes!

Once baby arrives - stock freezer with home cooked meals for them!

I'd like some muslins and blankets. And a bottle of champagne!

Homemade frozen lasagnas/chillis were what I was most grateful for! Schnuggle bath, grolight, engel wool all in one for winter we're excellent. Can't go wrong with a board book either for when they are a bit bigger.

Had baby shower a week or 2 ago. Best present I found was a large tote bag that said "baby crap (I used to be fun)" and it was full of little things like nappies, nappy bags, wipes, talcum powder, a small toy, nipple cream, nappy rash cream, face cloths, baby shampoo, baby lotion, etc. Probably one of the cheaper gifts as it was all lidl and Aldi own brand but probably going to be the most useful. Diapers are also appreciated as starting to stockpile them now.

Black pyjamas or joggers to wear while still bleeding would’ve been the best. Having to explain to hubby he needed to bring these more urgently than nappies still makes me tell everyone to take dark towels and dark loose trousers!

Ewan the dream sheep and blankie and Gummee Glove for teething etc.
(Gummee are amazing!)
