Subchorionic Bleed

Hi there,

I posted yesterday about having some dark brown spotting and was encouraged to get scanned, which I did. Truthfully I thought everything was probably okay and it was just one of those things, but it turns out I have what they called a "very large subchorionic bleed", which is behind the placenta and bigger than baby (who currently looks on track size and heartbeat wise). I'm 12 weeks along.

Does anyone have any experience of this that they'd be willing to share? The midwife was lovely and said there is a chance it could heal itself, but that given the size things aren't looking very good.

I know no one here can predict the outcome, and things probably won't work out, but I'm struggling to stay positive and I really, really don't want to lose this baby Sad

I had big bleeds at 9 and 11 weeks. At 11 weeks they diagnosed a very large subchorionic bleed. It was about half the size of the twins and their sacs - so maybe the same as yours if there's just one baby?

I was put on one below bed rest - lots of rest, no lifting stuff, no more than one flight of stairs, no sex - until I'd gone two weeks without further bleeding.

At 12 weeks it has shrunk. At 15 weeks it had shrunk more and the bleeding had stopped. At 16 weeks it was all gone.

Now 27 weeks and it's not an issue anymore. Although it did make it harder to see if the twins were identical or fraternal, which is annoying as they were on the wrong care plan for 8 weeks.

It was awful and frightening at the time. I cried lots. But things can work out.

Thanks so much for your post, it's so good to hear that sometimes things can work out. Just really scared, so lots of tears here too. Hope the rest of your pregnancy runs smoothly and huge congratulations on your twins Smile

It definitely can work out. If you search for subchorionic threads on mumsnet you'll probably find some other stories of successful pregnancies. Lots of us bleed in the first trimester and the babies are still ok.

This pregnancy I had a huge, huge bleed with enormous clots at 8 weeks. I had never heard of a subchorionic haemorrhage so thought I was miscarrying and was absolutely devastated, cried all night! Got a scan the next morning and it was a very large area. It bled again a few times but nothing on the same scale and a scan a week later showed it was shrinking and healing itself.

I'm now 32 weeks and the rest of the pregnancy has been plain sailing, very healthy and happy. Smile

Fingers crossed your body manages to heal itself and the pregnancy can continue safely. Best of luck to you, it's horribly scary Flowers

I’ve had a good outcome and a bad outcome from a subchronic hematoma.
The bad outcome was a huge blood clot - size of a can of Coke and at only 8/9 weeks. I’m sure yours wouldn’t be this big. I also
Experienced a lot of bleeding around 12 hours after the First brown blood.
Sounds positive if you’ve not had red blood?
Second time it was noticed about 8 weeks and still there at 12 weeks but I only had a small amount of bleed around 8/9 weeks. It was gone by 20 weeks and my twins are 16 months.
It’s so scary but I would definitely look to the positives of not being much bleeding since the first spotting.
