No heartbeat detected at 9 weeks, what next?

trippingoverrainbows · 05/03/2018 18:53

Booked a private scan today as had completely lost all of my pregnancy symptoms. The sonographer confirmed that growth stopped around 6+6 and she couldn't detect a heartbeat today (should have been 9 weeks today). I had an early scan at 6 weeks in local EPU due to light bleeding, heartbeat detected at that point and had no issues since then.

I will call the EPU in the morning.

So many questions: In the meantime what can I expect? What will happen given that it looks like MMC as no bleeding etc since early scan? So sorry for everyone else going through this at the moment. Many thanks x

Sorry for your loss.

I suspect that of you do not start to bleed imminently then you will be offered either a DNC or a chemical expulsion. I had 3 such miscarriages and chemical was less stressful. The worst part is going to the same clinic as other pregnant women for this to happen, so be aware this may happen.

I know it's a very unmumsnet thing to do but sending you hugs x

I am so sorry that this has happened. You may start to bleed, you may not, the next few days are going to be tough for you, whatever treatment is decided on. Flowers

@Allthebestnamesareused @Emmageddon thank you for your responses. I feel a bit numb really. Should I be going to work tomorrow? (I work in an office, my boss also already knows) so feel like I probably should, I just don't know how to feel and fear I might end up getting there and crying. There are so many pregnant people around the office

@Allthebestnamesareused so sorry to hear that you've been through this multiple times :-(

I wouldn't go to work if it were me. I'm sorry for your loss.

booandbumpp · 05/03/2018 19:32

I had a mmc at 9 weeks and I started bleeding 2 weeks later. They have me the option of d&c, a pill (I think if under 8 weeks it's oral) or waiting.
It started like a period with really bad lower back pain, but once the worst was over after a couple of hours on the toilet, it was just like a period.
I'm sorry for your loss xx

maxiflump1 · 05/03/2018 19:35

So sorry for your loss op. I had exactly the same as you three weeks ago also at 9 weeks. I was given medication to try and speed the process up but our failed (twice) I was given the option of letting nature take its course or booking in for surgery. I went for the surgery and although it was quite uncomfortable at the time I feel relieved that I knew it was over and done with. I haven't been to work for last three weeks as was petrified that I would start to lose blood at work which seemed like an awful thought. My EPU was happy to sign me off no questions asked. Physically I'm doing ok but mentally it's tough. Thinking of you at this time ThanksThanks

trippingoverrainbows · 05/03/2018 19:41

It's so sad that so so many go through this. This is our first attempt at TTC.
I am also scared of bleeding starting while in work, so I'll probably call work tomorrow and let them know I won't be in. For the ladies that have been through this before how long was it between calling your EPU and you receiving your chosen treatment? I'm just trying to figure out how long I may be out of commission for

Scan showed no hb on a Wed, mc at home on the Thurs. Didn't attend the appointment as felt fine and was confident everything was OK. Don't worry at home if you feel out of your depth do ring someone..

Sorry for your loss op.

EnoughisEnough1204 · 05/03/2018 20:10

I am so sorry for your loss op. I have had three mc including two mmc. I had an ERPC for both by choice. I couldn't stand being in limbo. With my first I had been bleeding on and off for about two weeks and I think that it would've passed naturally if I had waited a couple more days. Please don't feel that you have to go in to work. Although nothing major is happening physically at the moment you need time to process things emotionally. I had two weeks off with both of mine from discovering there was no heartbeat until I'd recovered after the surgery. Everybody is different so please try not to be hard in yourself and do what feels right for you.

Hi op. I was referred to EPU on a weds where they discovered no heartbeat. Was told I would have to wait a week for the surgical management but I wasn't prepared to wait that long so went for the medical/chemical the following day. Unfortunately that didn't work and went back 5 days later for another go. That also failed so ended up having the surgical procedure 12 days after finding we had no heartbeat. I personally found the waiting awful as am usually quite a control freak. The staff at our EPU was so supportive and compassionate. Best of luck to you x

trippingoverrainbows · 06/03/2018 10:59

Called EPU and the first appointment they have is Thursday morning Confused bit of a waiting game now.

Hi OP - just to say that I have had both a D&C, a medically managed miscarriage and a spontaneous miscarriage which occurred before my date for my second D&C for my MMCs. I was further along with mine at 12 weeks, so I am not sure if that makes a difference in terms of pain etc.

My personal preference would be to have a D&C. They treat you very sensitively, it's all over with very quickly and with very little discomfort.

Sorry you're having to wait until Thursday for your EPU appointment. I really do feel for you as this waiting in the unknown is a horrible place to be. Take the time of work, go for gentle walks, watch box sets and look after yourself. You'll feel so much better for having done so. Your doctor should be able to sign you off.

Niketan · 06/03/2018 12:15

Hi OP. So sorry to hear that you are in this position. I had the same thing last year with my first pregnancy at 11 weeks, a MMC, the baby had stopped growing at 7+6. I went for the D&C as by the point I knew the baby had died I just wanted it to be over and not wait.

My experience of a D&C in the circumstances was fine, it was over very fast. I had some minor pain relief afterwards and minor cramps for a couple of days when going to the toilet but physically I was fine.

Emotionally it took a bit longer. I had only a week off work. I thought going back would help me take my mind off it, to be honest the effects didn't really hit me till a few weeks later. So I would echo everyone else above and say take as much time as you need, be kind to yourself, you have not done anything to cause this and you could not have done anything to prevent it. Talk to people when you can bear to especially your partner/close friend. Mindless netflix is your friend. Also don't guilt trip yourself about how you feel about other pregnant people. I think the feelings of jealousy/sometimes rage are very normal. I wish you all the best for the next few days. Flowers

Allthebestnamesareused · 06/03/2018 15:50

Thinking of you Tripping and hope you are feeling ok-ish!

trippingoverrainbows · 06/03/2018 18:05

Thanks all Thanks
By the sounds of everyone else's experiences I think the D&C is what I'll try and pursue. No bleeding yet so think I'll definitely need some 'help'.

Thinking of you @trippingoverrainbows. I hope you were able to take the time off work. Look after yourself.

BlueMermaid96 · 06/03/2018 18:39

I'm so sorry for your loss lovely.
I went through this in August last year. I was 6 weeks when baby stopped growing, found out at 12 weeks.
The scan you're about to go to, it can start the onset of the mmc. It does hurt, it is painful & very emotionally tiring. I'm sure you'd rather have the truth about it... Just rest, take the week off of work and try to relax as best as you can.

trippingoverrainbows · 06/03/2018 20:44

@Emmageddon I told work I wouldn't be in this week at least (looks like next week also though as likely won't be able to take any 'action' until Friday at the earliest after appt at EPU on Thurs). Work are amazing though, they just said take as long as you need.

@BlueMermaid96 if you don't mind me asking could you please give me some more details about the scan? e.g the physically painful side and the start of the actual miscarriage, I am unsure what you mean x

OP posts:
BlueMermaid96 · 06/03/2018 21:33

If you have an internal scan which they may do to have a further look, it can hurt. Mine bruised me! But everyone is different. When she scanned me, because of the force from both an abdominal and internal it started the onset of the mc, which then the next day after finding out my little one was dead for 6 weeks I started bleeding more & then the contractions began x

trippingoverrainbows · 06/03/2018 21:52

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this @BlueMermaid96 that must have been awful for you. Thank you for the info though, I'd rather know the worst case then hope for the best I guess.

Had my appt this morning at the EPU and after hearing all the options from the midwife and reading the experiences of the ladies commenting on this thread I have opted for the surgical management under general anaesthetic. Thanks for everyone's kind words

So sorry for your loss OP

flobella · 08/03/2018 15:33

Sorry for your loss, I was in a similar position last year and also opted for surgical management. Let me just reassure you that in my case it was all very straightforward and I experienced much less pain and bleeding afterwards than I had prepared myself for. The staff were lovely and I was very well looked after. My cycle reset itself like clockwork and I believe my fertility was straight back to where it was beforehand. Look after yourself. I found I was very tired the next day but a couple of days of complete rest and you should be feeling much brighter.
