Weird request - washing powder that gets rid of thrush

I'm 31 weeks pg and have been suffering from thrush pretty much my whole pregnancy. Apparently washing my knickers on 40 degrees doesn't kill it off and could be reinfecting myself. Does anyone know of a product I can wash my knickers and towels in that will get rid of it, and save me having to boil them.

Not heard of this before
there is some data to say that if you miss and step on the gusset while putting your knickers on you can tranfer foot flora (thrush, the athlete's foot fungus etc) to your groin.

Get white cotton knickers and wash them at 60?

NineUnlikelyTales · 05/05/2007 10:09

I believe that vinegar in the wash would help, and also washing at 60 as MrsBadger suggests. You might also want to cut down on sugar in your diet and yeast (marmite, mushrooms, bread etc)

Oh, and acidophilus tablets from the health food shop cured me when I had nipple thrush with BF. They are basically 'good bacteria'. Do check with your MW first though.

My midwife told me about it yesterday. I've cut out wheat, yeast, sugar, am taking acidophilus and homepathic remedies but STILL have it

Bad luck But on the positive side, you haven't long to go if it is just the pg causing it

hayes · 05/05/2007 10:21

i can sympathise with you as I suffered during pg too....as someone else said you have not long to go now, miraculously it will clear up after the birth its just the pg hormones that keep it coming back. its not a nice thing tho at all. try washing them at 60 and see how you get on with that.

Second washing at 60 and also put clothes on extra rinse.

Use non-bio powder and ditch the fabric conditioner, if you use it.

I think you might have to face the shame of grey knickers for the next 9 weeks, unfortunately.

Someone gave me the advice, I thing it was here, to steam the gusset of your knickers with the iron. The steam gets hotter than your washine machine will and kills the fungus. I have to say I've been doing it and no reocurrences (touch wood)

eidsvold · 05/05/2007 12:35

not sure if you can get it in the UK but here in Aus we can get a canestan rinse that you put in your machine as part of the rinse cycle and it helps. I use it with dd3's nappies to kill germs.

Or soak in Napisan.

fizzbuzz · 05/05/2007 14:34

Yeah, I am plagued by thrush and was told by specialist to:

Soak knickers in napisan
Wash at 90C
Only use non-bio powder.

However my thrush has defied all medicalspecialists, BUT has always responded well to homeopathy. However you nedd to see a proper homeopath, rather than just buying some somewhere.

The homeopathic remedies that worked for me were:
Candida and Cantharis.

HTH

Thank you everyone for your replies. Surely one of these has to work. My main aim at the moment is to get rid of it for the birth so I don't infect the baby...
