Does anyone know factually if preeclampsia is genetic?

From what I can remember it does have a genetic component, so if your mum or sister had it you're more likely to. Also more likely with a first pregnancy to your partner.

Thanks for replying
My mum had 3 pregnancies one c section to natural nothing major scary no preeclampsia

Then both sisters have had babies ending in preeclampsia and HELPP syndrome and emergancy c sections then planned sections for baby number 2.

I'm not pregnant but if we are lucky enough it won't be a million miles away not really sure why I'm posting I'm just desperate for a 'normal' birth but scared it may be quite the opposite

Family history of preeclampsia is a risk factor, I had to take mini aspirin during pregnancy because of this increased risk. I did end up with preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome and was induced slightly early but had a “normal” birth following induction.

I’m receiving extra care now that I’m expecting my 2nd, consultant led and will have extra midwife appointments after 28weeks for BP and urine checks to spot any changes early. To be honest I am nervous about the possibility of getting preeclampsia again but my care 1st time round was excellent.

Preeclampsia and HELLP don’t automatically mean you’ll have a csection. There’s a good website action on preeclampsia which is very informative.

My mum had 2 children and had pre-eclampsia with her first. I've had 2 children and NOT had it with either.

I think action on pre eclampsia is the page? Honestly I wouldn't worry about it before you're even pregnant. Even if you do develop it it doesn't mean you can't have a "normal" birth.
There is a genetic component. I don't have a family history but I developed pre eclampsia and was induced early and it was actually ok. I'm under consultant care this time round and take aspirin and have extra appointments. It may be the case that with family history they'd do this with you, and as a result any problems with blood pressure etc would be picked up early.

Our obstetrician said there may be a generic component and that if you have PE with your first, and any subsequent pregnancies are with the same partner, you won't get PE again.

It was true for us but our obstetrician is very eccentric so I wasn't sure if this was a researched fact or one of his 'observations'.

My mother had pre eclampsia with both her pregnancies (with the same partner!).
I've had two pregnancies, in both I had pregnancy induced hypertension, and was monitored carefully, with mini aspirin along with methyldopa and labetalol. This did not develop into pre eclampsia for me. I had a c-section with my second, but for other medical reasons.

My mum had pre-eclampsia. I had it also with both pregnancies - both with the same father.

SweetieBaby · 04/03/2018 21:54

Although pre eclampsia is more likely in a first pregnancy with a partner it is not impossible to get it in subsequent pregnancies with the same partner. I had it in both of pregnancies - with the same partner - although it was more severe in the first. A family history of PE is a risk factor. Action on Pre Eclampsia has very good information on all aspects of PE, including guidelines for care.

My grandma had preeclampsia (toxaemia) with all 4 of her children, my mum had it with me and I'm now at 35 weeks and my blood pressure has been creeping up so I'm now being monitored for this also.

I'm also on aspirin due to low pappA and to 'prevent' preeclampsia.

I'd say it was hereditary yes x
