Pregnancy multivitamins?

What do you all think about them? I am taking pregnancare, and did in my last pregnancy. Midwives have told me not to bother other than the healthy start vitamins with folic acid and vit D, but I have kept going, feeling like they are a safety net for the times when all I feel like eating is carbs!

I've just been reading about the research published last year showing no evidence for their effectiveness, but it wasn't a systematic review or rct so not necessarily robust research. If I continue to take them to be on the safe side there's no harm is there?

No harm in continuing to take them. I’m still taking a multivit (when I remember!) because I’ve been so sick and my diet has been terrible!! I’ll probably phase it out and just take vitamin D soon, now my diet is improving!

Im just taking the healthy start ones too as i have Pernicious Anemia and get the injections every 2 months with that and having a Gastric sleeve my intake of vitamins is pretty good.

whatever works for you is the best - remember 50 odd years ago this information wasnt really around and our parents arent that screwed up by it. :)

I’ve been taking the seven seas ones because my diet is shocking at the moment. Anything remotely healthy gets passed over with a look of scornful derision while I barrel my way to the deep fried carbs.

I don’t want scurvy or rickets so the vitamins will stay Smile

I'm taking them. I took a multivitamin before I was ttc so why wouldn't I carry on now?

My mw told me to start taking them at my booking appointment other day! The evidence suggests vitamin supplements are unnecessary if you have a balanced diet.

Mind you she also said I shouldn't be eating runny eggs and I could eat goat's cheese which is contradictory to NHS advice do who knows.

Did she just mean folic acid and vitamin D Biscay? Folic acid is important up until 12 weeks and vitamin D should be taken all the way through pregnancy and breastfeeding.

No she meant multivitamins. Folic acid and vitamin D are obviously essential but she was talking about something like pregnacare which has about 20 other vitamins and minerals in too.

That's funny Biscay, there's so much of that conflicting advice. I suspect that I probably don't need them with a reasonably balanced diet she says having just eaten a Chinese takeaway but I'm assuming I'll just piss out what I don't need so will persevere for the time being. I took them daily for the first pregnancy. During the second preg., I had mild morning sickness and they contributed to the nausea so I quit taking them. DD2, 8oz at birth, is fine.

My doctor told me not to bother and just take folic acid and vitamin D. My diet is usually quite good but if the morning sickness kicks in I may well start on a supplement.

I'm also taking pregnacare. I usually take a multi vit everyday anyway but had to stop my usual ones because they contain vitamin A. They certainly won't do you any harm!
