Pregnancy multivitamins?

What do you all think about them? I am taking pregnancare, and did in my last pregnancy. Midwives have told me not to bother other than the healthy start vitamins with folic acid and vit D, but I have kept going, feeling like they are a safety net for the times when all I feel like eating is carbs!

I've just been reading about the research published last year showing no evidence for their effectiveness, but it wasn't a systematic review or rct so not necessarily robust research. If I continue to take them to be on the safe side there's no harm is there?

No harm in continuing to take them. I’m still taking a multivit (when I remember!) because I’ve been so sick and my diet has been terrible!! I’ll probably phase it out and just take vitamin D soon, now my diet is improving!

Im just taking the healthy start ones too as i have Pernicious Anemia and get the injections every 2 months with that and having a Gastric sleeve my intake of vitamins is pretty good.

whatever works for you is the best - remember 50 odd years ago this information wasnt really around and our parents arent that screwed up by it. :)

I’ve been taking the seven seas ones because my diet is shocking at the moment. Anything remotely healthy gets passed over with a look of scornful derision while I barrel my way to the deep fried carbs.

I don’t want scurvy or rickets so the vitamins will stay Smile

I'm taking them. I took a multivitamin before I was ttc so why wouldn't I carry on now?

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 03/03/2018 13:48

My mw told me to start taking them at my booking appointment other day! The evidence suggests vitamin supplements are unnecessary if you have a balanced diet.

Mind you she also said I shouldn't be eating runny eggs and I could eat goat's cheese which is contradictory to NHS advice do who knows.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 03/03/2018 14:05

Did she just mean folic acid and vitamin D Biscay? Folic acid is important up until 12 weeks and vitamin D should be taken all the way through pregnancy and breastfeeding.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 03/03/2018 14:08

No she meant multivitamins. Folic acid and vitamin D are obviously essential but she was talking about something like pregnacare which has about 20 other vitamins and minerals in too.

Smellyjo · 03/03/2018 18:46

That's funny Biscay, there's so much of that conflicting advice. I suspect that I probably don't need them with a reasonably balanced diet she says having just eaten a Chinese takeaway but I'm assuming I'll just piss out what I don't need so will persevere for the time being. Thanks for everyone's thoughts, hope you all keep well Smile

I took them daily for the first pregnancy. During the second preg., I had mild morning sickness and they contributed to the nausea so I quit taking them. DD2, 8oz at birth, is fine.

Magpie24 · 03/03/2018 20:00

My doctor told me not to bother and just take folic acid and vitamin D. My diet is usually quite good but if the morning sickness kicks in I may well start on a supplement.

LauraO1905 · 03/03/2018 20:39

I'm also taking pregnacare. I usually take a multi vit everyday anyway but had to stop my usual ones because they contain vitamin A. They certainly won't do you any harm!
