Pregnant... now what?

Two days ago I found out I was pregnant wig my first. I'm about 4 weeks (if I worked out the dates), I have a 23 day cycle so shorter than the average, but my little bfp came up straight away and pretty strong just 2 days into my missed period.

My question is, now what? I have no idea what I'm doing. I have booked a GP appointment for this coming Wednesday, but is there anything you recommend in the meantime? Help a clueless girl out, I'd like this bean to stick!

Folic acid and vit d.
Then expect lots of waiting! Gp will normally refer to midwife who will do booking in appointment around 8-11 weeks before 12 week scan.

Congratulations Flowers

Make sure you are taking pregnancy vitamins with plenty of folic acid but thats about it Smile

In my area, you dont need to see the doctor, you just self refer to te local midwife unit and you get a booking in appointment at about 10 weeks. For your first they also offered an early group meeting to let you kno what to expect etc.

GPs are often not interested in most areas. They won't do bloods or confirm pregnancy, they just tell you to self refer with the midwife which you do via your health centre or local hospital for an appt about 8 weeks, midwife will take a history and refer you for your scan.

MochiBean · 02/03/2018 17:43

Thank you both! I have ordered some pregnancy multivitamins so hopefully they will arrive soon :) I didn't know if I could book straight with a midwife so I figured my GP would just tell me what to do Grin

I keep reading that most wouldn't get a BFP as early as me, but it seems odd as it was when I missed a period... has anyone else on here found out at around 4 weeks?

Congratulations! Most areas don't need you to see a GP so do check with reception so you don't waste an appointment. Have a read of the Nhs website for advice regarding what you can eat - there are very few things that are not allowed in pregnancy but lots of stuff that people will tell you you shouldn't eat!

MochiBean · 02/03/2018 17:50

Thanks @welshweasel - I actually find the receptionists at my drs really useless, so I will probably feel better going to see a dr anyway.

Following advice from you all I have realised a hospital near me allows you to self refer... but am I too early? Do I need to wait until I am a bit further along?

Most people will get a positive from the day of their missed period, some will get one sooner.
The GP won’t see you for pregnancy in our area, you self refer to the midwife who does the booking in appointment at 9-10 weeks.
Good luck and congratulations!

kirinm · 02/03/2018 17:58

I self referred at my local hospital at 5w. They sent me my booking in appointment and scan. I've not seen my GP at all. Congratulations!

MochiBean · 02/03/2018 18:01

Maybe I should just self refer now? I'm in London so I have so many locals haha... plus we're hoping to have moved when I'm actually ready to give birth (property is currently being renovated but won't be ready for about 6 month), which would mean a different hospital would be my local... which should I go for?

Oh dear. I did not Time this well haha

Hi Op - congratulations! I found out when I was 4 weeks pregnant and it feels like forever ago. My morning sickness and exhaaustion started at 6 weeks but it’s hasnt been too bad really. You should join the October/November pregnancy thread, those threads are very supportive and informative.

zaalitje · 02/03/2018 18:16

You can self refer now OP, they just don't see you till about 8 weeks.

MochiBean · 02/03/2018 18:18

Hi @Hispterwannabe - thank you! I joined the November thread but found it a bit overwhelming as it was so busy!

May I ask how far along you are now (just because I'm nosy)!

I'm dreading morning sickness tbh. I have an overactive gag reflex as it is... Confused

I’d book into your current local
Maternity hospital if I were you - you never know, your renovations could go over.

kirinm · 02/03/2018 18:26

Mochi - if you're anywhere near Kings, I'd highly recommend their antenatal care (so far).

MochiBean · 02/03/2018 18:29

Oooh @kirinm! They're actually my local currently, thanks for the recommendation Smile

I had my DS at St Thomas and they were absolutely amazing, I had a really difficult birth and they couldn't have been anymore helpful. Congratulations

MochiBean · 02/03/2018 19:04

Thanks also @crow2018 - I think they're on a possible list for my location. It's great to hear from others that these places are good!
