Pregnant after two missed miscarriages, is it worth taking aspirin?

Had two missed miscarriages last year, one at 11 weeks (HB had stopped at 8 weeks) and one at 12 weeks (HB stopped at 9 weeks). Ended up having a D&C with both.

Just found out I’m pregnant again (four months after the last miscarriage) and I’m absolutely terrified the same will happen again. Of course I’ve been googling to see if there’s anything I can do to prevent it and have noticed a few women mentioning both baby aspirin and also progesterone supplements, just wondering if either are worth it or necessary? Or if there’s anything else at all I can do? I’m so scared and anxious.

I'm taking baby aspirin because it's twins and I'm a first time mum.

If my BMI was over 35 they'd have said to take it even with one baby.

One of my doctors said she recommends it for all first time mums and basically everyone male/female all the time as it's shown to have so many positive effects.

My doctor adivised me to take it after my MMC at 12 weeks.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I've taken baby aspirin - this is my second pregnancy. I had a MC at 12 weeks with my first pregnancy. I didn't hesitate and took it as soon as I found out I was pregnant this time around.

At my meeting with the consultant he was bemused by my decision and quizzed me on my research and my reasonings which made me really upset. I was also questioned (more lightly) by the midwife at my booking in appointment, so just be aware that if you've not been prescribed aspirin you may have to explain why you've chosen to take it. None of them told me to stop or told me anything worrying so I continued.

I ended up stopping the aspirin after 24 weeks as I felt I was in more of a 'safe zone' and luckily everything has been fine. I'm now 33 weeks and counting down babys arrival.

Personally I wouldn't take progesterone unless you actually know that you're lacking. There are tests you can buy online to have this checked - think they are around £35 if you Google it.

75mg of aspirin has zero bad effects so taking it can only be a good thing

QuickGetTheEggplants · 02/03/2018 12:44

My consultant suggested it to me after a late mmc. He said, more or less, "Chances are you don't need it and it won't make any difference, but the side effects are minimal so you might as well." As it turns out, this pregnancy the baby has a completely random umbilical cord problem, and the aspirin may well have made a difference after all.

What are the benefits of aspirin?
I am on progesterone tablets.

Iv got two kids .. and had 4 miscarriages I'm now 14 weeks pregnant with my third and my midwife wants me to see a consultant for aspirin so it's probably better off speaking to your midwife at least then it can prevent anything x

Hi pink. I had 2 MCs, one at 11 weeks (HB stopped at 9 weeks) and one at 12 weeks (not sure when HB stopped). I'm now 27 weeks pregnant and have been taking 75mg asprin since BFP - you can buy it in superdrug. I don't know if the asprin has made any difference but I felt i had to try something different, and from extensive googling, as frantically says, it seems there's no bad effects. I didn't tell the doctor or midwife I was taking it in case they told me to stop! Planning on stopping when I hit 30 weeks. In the end, it has to be your decision though. I hope this is your rainbow baby.

So sorry for your losses.
Congratulations on your latest pregnancy.

I had a missed miscarriage and then miscarriage last year. I was lucky enough to fall pregnant straight after my last miscarriage and did nothing differently. I’m now 34 weeks. Yes, I was petrified. Yes, I contemplated aspirin. I decided not to take it and to trust the medical advice that my experiences were indeed “just bad luck” and this pregnancy would be a success. I understood there was a possibility I’d lose this baby too but accepted that if the unthinkable did happen again, we’d get the tests and support we needed to go forward.

With 6 weeks now to go until I meet my baby, I’m pleased I didn’t take a drug unnecessarily. Whether I’d feel that way had I lost this baby is another thing, of course. It’s your choice and yes it could help, but there’s a reason they don’t prescribe it after two miscarriages.

All the best for the future, whatever you decide to do x

I had three MC before I had DS2 (one Was CP). I asked about aspirin and they said no even though my very sympathetic and helpful GP did not disregard my CP and sent me for all the tests. Anyway, I am now cradling my 6.5 month old DS. I was just unlucky as nothing came up in any tests. It is of course entirely your choice. Flowers sorry for your losses

The hospital recurrent miscarriage unit told me to take baby aspirin (after 3 miscarriages)...my baby girl was born early October :-). Not sure if I truly needed it however it couldn't cause any harm so nothing to lose!

aetw · 03/03/2018 07:49

Have you asked for any tests to be run? So after three miscarriages and one ectopic we final had a series of blood test that aren’t run as standard on the nhs. This is is to test for clotting factors, Leiden’s etc. They call it a thromophilia screen. Request one of these. I’m 7 weeks now and I’m not on aspirin following these test, recommendation from consultant, but they sometimes also suggest Fragmin injections if your tests come back positive. I wish we had known before going through what we did. Good luck. X

What is baby aspirin? After my third miscarriage, I took progesterone for the first three months of any pregnancy. It worked for me...

Happened · 03/03/2018 07:57

My friend did after two miscarriages, May have been a coincidence but her baby was fine when she took it on the third pregnancy.

Kah09 · 03/03/2018 11:07

I'm a type one diabetic and had one miscarriage. I decided to take a baby aspirin each day from when I found out and I'm now 9 weeks.

The hospital said it's absolutely fine, we're going to recommend it to me anyway and it helps reduce risks of pre eclampsia. Another Gynae lady questioned my choice as she said it increases blood flow to the uterus and will make my baby bigger...

My midwife said it assists with implantation and placenta formation, so I feel happy with my decision.

Wishing you all the best! I'd recommend it to anyone really as it's such a low dose and everything points towards it being useful for baby.

ClareB83 · 03/03/2018 12:28

Baby aspirin is just a small dose of aspirin - 75mg.

jellycrumble · 03/03/2018 13:18

I decided to take it of my own accord (75mg daily) after lots of research (I wouldn't advise you to do this but I was desperate and terrified of having a third MC)
Taking it from when I first found out didn't do any harm and was actually advised by my consultant to start taking it at 12 weeks anyway due to pre-eclampsia risk and high BMI. I did have a family history of clotting disorders however these tests came back clear.

I'm currently 23 weeks pregnant with a little girl Smile Good luck!

DwangelaForever · 03/03/2018 13:27

I had one healthy pregnancy resulting in my gorgeous DD, I took aspirin daily from my 12 week scan with her.

I had a MC last year and didn't take aspirin at all.

I'm pregnant again now and have been taking aspirin from I found out and have passed the point where I previously miscarried!

I would take it even just for peace of mind for yourself!

deaddeadgood · 03/03/2018 13:44
