Telling your manager you're pregnant at 5 weeks?

I have literally just found out I'm pregnant (yay!) however kinda knew already as I was extremely nauseous, which is unlike me. This morning I've woken up and vomited, and feel like I'm going to be sick again. I work in a very low risk office job however this makes it hard to disguise my sickness. I'm tired, keep having to take screen breaks and am all over struggling. Would I be silly to tell my immediate manager in confidence why I am feeling like this? It's a whole heap of pressure having to come up with excuses, and I'm worried that I may need to take a day off but will be out of pocket as I'm not protected by maternity laws until I inform my employer. Thoughts? (I'm about 4-5 weeks so very early). Thank you.

I told mine early on as I was sick a lot in the mornings and kept going in late. It made things a whole lot easier, no one else knew until I after the first scan.

Don't tell your employer until 20 weeks is always my advice.

I told my manager at 6 weeks when the HG started to set in 🤢

I had a good relationship with my manager, which helped. I would advise you to tell as pregnancy related sickness can not be added to your normal sickness record.

I told my manager at 9 weeks and unfortunately also told the assistant manager at the same time (she wouldn’t leave the room, I was on long term sick and wasn’t going to get a chance to tell him before an important decision was being made regarding projects otherwise). My manager was great! However the assistant manager leaked it out and by the time I was back in a week later most people knew! I was gutted as it was a) first (long awaited pregnancy) b) not her business to tell anyone and c) took away from the magic of telling my colleagues ☹️ d) we hadn’t had our 12 week scan yet and our families didn’t know yet, but it appeared everyone at my work did, so we had to tell our families before the scan as my parents are friends of friends of some of my work colleagues ☹️ Not happy!

So yes go for it if your manager is trustworthy... if they’re like my assistant manager just ride it out. The doctor can always back date a sick note to cover pregnancy related illness 😊

Like the PP check if you can trust them. My boss is the biggest gossip ever so I didn’t tell him until after my 12 week scan.

I have with all my pregnancies. High risk environment and meant I got support when things went wrong

I told him. He nearly jumped out of his chair with happiness and I feel so much better for it. So glad I told him. I just thought to myself, it's a little bit of protection for me. It's not an announcement and it is in confidence. I something goes wrong, I can tell him without having to explain and take time off work. Definitely the best decision!
