Hi all Smile So I found out today that due to my Polyhydramnios and Gestational Diabetes I'm being induced at 38 weeks. Which is on Saturday (3 days away eeek!)
I'm really excited but also worried. This is my 3rd pregnancy and with the first 2 the births were very natural with minimal medical intervention.
I'd love to hear some induction stories (good and bad)?
And are there any questions I should quiz my midwife with tomorrow?
Thanks ladies xx

No stories but good luck and enjoy your new baby

Second was induction and no intervention or pain relief, took about a day after contractions started and slowly ramped up. It was a lovely experience compared to my naturally spontaneous labour

So I was I was induced and it took days.
I went in with reduced movements at the end of the pregnancy.
They decided to admit me for Induction.
Saturday morning approx 630 am after a sleepless night in a noisy ward pessary 1 was put in to get my cervix in to place.
It was supposed to be In for 24 hours, I started with period pains, then got contractions and the paracetamol and codeine wasn't helping at all.
They monitored the contractions which I found awful and decided to check me - cervix was in a position for my waters to be broken so they took pessary out - apparently they can use 2 of these over 48 hours.
Then I sat there from Saturday afternoon until Monday morning.
Barely sleeping, bored out of my brain and fed up - wards were ridiculously busy and no space on the next time ward to move me on.
By Monday morning I felt like a walking zombie and cried my eyes out to the midwife.
I was exhausted and nowhere near giving birth, thought I'd never be able to do it unless I got some rest.
Monday lunch time they finally moved me to a Labour room.
3 uncomfortable attempts later- legs ended up in stirrups my waters were broken and I sat there with it just constantly leaking from me.

They then decided to start me on the drip to get things moving. I was encouraged against the epidural as I'd heard the drip was horrific and to try gas and air.
WORST DECISION EVER!!! the pain went from 0-60 in no time at all. It was unbearable, no breaks between contractions. G+A was pointless. It hurt so much that I actually felt as if I'd left my body to try and deal with the pain - I've never felt anything like it.
It felt like a life time waiting for the epidural, I was completely spaced with the pain by this point.
Eventually the epidural was in and I got some pain relief, they then turned up the drip and I waited for 4 hours.

I was then examined and absolutely no progression at all!
As you can imagine by this point i was thrilled lol
So the midwife said we will increase the drip and wait another 4 hours.
If no progression then I'd have to have a csection.
So 4 hours later miraculously I'd got to 10cm BUT baby hadn't moved down at all!
Hmm
So she said we would wait an hour and see what happened.
15 mins later babies heart rate went up and didn't come back down, so they decided we would push.
So I pushed and pushed and did some more pushing and Nothing!

So a consultant came in and did some faffing, he couldn't move her and she had gone back to back
At this point they decided we would go to theatre and try to move her again and to try forceps.
Well 2 more male consultants did some faffing and surprise surprise NOTHING!
she was still to far up that it wasn't worth trying the forceps.

So we go to a c section, my baby girl was eventually born at 238am.

Then the stitching - OMG I felt so much pressure. Despite 3 lots of drugs I still vomited everywhere but after an hour it was finally over.

Phew!

Sorry I know my story isn't a fun one.
My main advice is
Don't expect it to be quick.
Prepare to be in a few days.
If they do the drip - ask for the epidural before they start it, you will regret it if you don't.

Good luck Mummy. Xxx

I bet that has made you feel better!!

TeaAndPjs · 28/02/2018 19:42

I'm going in sat too :) will get 1st pessary sat night but with view of having baby on Sunday

Good luck! Hope all goes well

Strawberry2017 · 28/02/2018 19:43

The worst thing was I was a first time mum and had no clue things could go like that!
I was misadvised on the epidural and I think had I have had it before the drip I could have rested and been comfortable.
Lesson definitely learnt for next time!

I was induced in September due to Preeclampsia and I had a lovely experience Smile

Pessery inserted Thursday night, by Friday morning nothing happened so was put on the drip at 9.30. Contractions started ramping up pretty quickly and I was 6cm by 12.30pm. Had an epidural and basically napped the rest of my labour until I needed to start pushing! DS was born at 9.30pm exactly after 10 minutes of pushing and about 6 pushes! Quite surprised as he was my first!

Best of luck and congratulations!! Thanks

OP I assume you've explored all the facts behind what I hope is your decision to be induced (as opposed to a lot of medical pros who have liability breathing down their necks). I was told I had to have a c section when I didn't. Baby was breach and I was lead to believe that if I didn't have a c I was going to kill my baby. Induction for me with birth no 1 was no walk in the park. Given that you've had the dream natural births ❤️ don't be a hero - ask for all the pain relief. Induction creates synthetic contractions. Working against your body rather than with. It's nothing like a natural birth. Sorry if this sounds hard I write this purely and honestly because I want you and baby to have a calm and empowered experience that's not dictated by liability and what will undoubtedly be minimal risk xx

I hate to share my induction story but you did say good or bad....

The drip is HORRENDOUS so be prepared. As mentioned above, the pain is ridiculous and comes from nowhere. My biggest tip would be to get the to do an epidural before they put the drip in. Epidural didn't work for me so I was in agony for 20 hours but that's rare. DEFINITELY have an epidural!!!

I was induced with my DD at 35 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. I pretty much hated pregnancy but my induction was fine.
Had pessary on the Friday night and had some mild pains through night but got some sleep. Waters broken in morning and drip started (wasn’t allowed to wait and see if breaking waters was enough due to pre-eclampsia). My labour was very quick and took me by surprise 9.40 waters broken and baby arrived 11.40 but I managed with gas and air. I think I zoned out a bit as don’t really remember much. I could listen to instructions and spoke to my DH and Mum occasionally but was happy enough to just focus on my breathing (and the lovely gas and air which after the initial sicky feeling meant I didn’t really care about the pain/ discomfort).

I’m pregnant again and have been suffering sickness, spd again but I’m not worried about labour or possibility of induction as first one was a positive experience overall.

2 induction, both went smoothly.

Took only 1 pessary 2nd baby and 2 for recent 3rd baby. Both straight forward , not too long labours. I preferred my inductions to my spontaneous labour.

Good luck op, hopefully

I had gd and was induced at 38 weeks too. Do you get to meet with a consultant first to discuss options? I met with one at about 36 weeks, had another scan too, as I was on metformin.

I wanted to keep induction as close to minimal intervention as I could so asked about options and timings. At my hospital, they give a slow acting pessary (24hr), up to x2, then can move onto fast acting (6 - 12hr) gel x3 applications, artificial rupture of membrane (manually break your waters) and final resort, the dreaded drip.

I had slow pessary, nothing happened, was monitored every 4 hrs. Next day had 2nd pessary, nothing all day, then waters went, contractions started and were coming thick and fast, 5cm dilated and established labour within an hour, baby out in less than 6 hours from waters. Used tens, pool (with continuous wireless telemetry that kept dropping out so had to get out the pool). Had ventouse but due to cord round babys neck, not linked to induction.

Key tips: Be clear with what you want. I really wanted a pool despite gd and did get it. I realky didnt want hormone drip or sliding scale so made clear I'd only have these as last resort if baby in danger.
Take gd snacks, hospital food isnt very gd friendly.
Take entertainment, you might be waiting days!
Take all the sweeps you can get. They definitely progressed my cervix along.
Finally...good luck!

I loved my induced birth.

I had 3x reduced movements and after a check on Wednesday night, I saw consultant on Thursday and was admitted on Friday at 1pm. 3pm I had sweep and first pessary, I was already 2cm but happy enough to go ahead.

So an evening of monitoring and eating and reading I had backache from hell but still slept until morning and had painkillers and heated when needed. Got up next morning for second sweep and pessary and was told it would be about 5pm until I was taken down to labour room and was just to relax and eat lol.

Went down after dinner, waters broken and spoke to anethestist who also inserted the cannula in my hand, I was 4cm at this stage and had been having contractions but nothing majorly painful and I just bounced on wall.

Baby was monitored via clip into skin of her head and I wandered the room, had a good laugh with midwife and doctor who popped in and by 6am I was in well active labour.
I asked for help as I could feel her getting stuck due to shape of canal so a quick numb up and episiotimy and a healthy happy daughter born at 7.50am.

Imho it's not a sudden sharp entrance into labour, your body just has a little help to get started and it's all good. Listen to your body and relax, stress makes it worse.

Feel free to beep me if I can help and good luck mama!

I was induced at 39 weeks due to baby measuring small, I was very upset as I had wanted a water birth with minimal intervention.

My induction was long, I ended up on the drip, it was fucking painful so I shouted bringing me the epidural! It was wonderful, I had a sleep, after 4 hours I was 10cm and ready to push. Baby out within an hour and just a graze. It was the beautiful, calm birth of my dreams, just not quite how I imagined!

Good luck ladies! x
