I had an SMM today and I just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else is feeling anxious like I was before I had it done.
Prior to this I have never had an operation, not even a hospital stay! As you can imagine, the thought of this was a little daunting for me & it was picked up when they checked my pulse!!
I had a twin miscarriage removed which stopped growing at 5 weeks (I was 11 weeks when I had op). All of the staff we saw today were so kind and considerate to both me and my partner (often the Dads are forgotten about so it was refreshing to see some medical staff talk to him about his feelings too). I was given the general anaesthetic at 8am and was awake in recovery by 8:50. When I woke up, I wasn't in any discomfort and the nurses had put a sanitary towel in between my legs to catch any post op bleeding. I was then put back into the Day Surgery unit by 9:30 with my partner and stayed there until 11:30 when we had to do paperwork to be discharged. I was able to walk the 10 minutes home without any discomfort.
If I was to have a miscarriage again I would certainly opt for this type of management if I had the choice.
I have had little bleeding at home although I have been sat/laying down a lot. I would guess I will get a bit more bleeding when I'm up and moving around.
We found out the twins had died when I was 9 weeks and didn't have the op until 11 weeks so we had time to 'get over' the miscarriage. I can imagine for some women, especially those with little time between finding out they have miscarried and having the op, that they will find the procedure very emotional. My partner was able to be with me for the whole time except for 8-9:30am where I was having the op done and in recovery so I wasn't aware he wasn't there for most of that hour and a half.
If this message has put at least one mind to rest I will be pleased.
