When to tell work?

I’m only just over 5 weeks pregnant, and I wasn’t planning on telling work until I was nearer 12 weeks.
But I’m feeling quite sickly of a morning (though only for a couple of hours usually) but I’m exhausted in the afternoons. Im aware I’m not my usual self and up to my usual work load. I’m worried they will think I’m taking the piss and if they knew the reason they would understand. I’m trying my best (and still doing better than some other staff who are just lazy haha)
What did people do in this situation?
We are also very short staffed and I feel a bit stressed.

Tell them as your sickness goes on a different record to when your not pregnant, they have to be a lot lot more lenient. Also they'll need to do a risk assessment and give you time of for appointments, scans, docs appointments all paid too xx

I told my boss straight away but explained that I wouldn’t be formally announcing to everyone until 12 weeks so would appreciate it if he kept it quiet.

I have needed time off and it has made things easier as he knows what’s going on.

Also, the reason why people put off telling is because there is a higher risk of miscarriage in the early days, but I think if I had a miscarriage I would want to take at least the day off so it just seems easier all round for me to have told him.

WSS ^^

I had to take a few days/mornings/afternoons off work in my previous pregnancies due to morning sickness so I told my boss straight away so he is aware and I'm not put on some sort of sickness management program if I am off. And I don't have to lie about why I'm off too.

I told them at 9 weeks as that's when the sickness really kicked in. I went in late each morning once it had mostly eased off, but I'm still really struggling with exhaustion, ravenous hunger and not being able to concentrate.

Told mine at about 8 weeks as I hadn't been feeling well and I'd had scares/bleeding. I told my boss to keep it to herself though until I had had my 12 week scan, which she did.

I told my practice manager last week at just over 5w so she'd know if I was off with sickness or should the worst happen. She said she'd have to tell my head of dept but otherwise keep it quiet until I'm ready to tell. The problem on our firm is that loads are married/related in management and I can see it getting out cos they can't keep their traps shut!

Tell them when you're comfortable. It'll save using A/L for appointments etc but it's your call x

I’d rather not tell them yet. I think my midwife appointment will be on my day off so they don’t know. If I needed sick leave I would tell them. I’ll keep it to myself for now I think. I’m managing my sickness etc well really, I just know I’m not 100% on form. But they don’t seem to have noticed that!

I had a miscarriage in January which I had to tell them about because I took time off work. I just want to be so careful this time and feel really worried with it. I don’t know what’s for the best. I can’t think of a good enough reason not to tell them apart from that most people wait til 12 weeks....

I think I was 11 weeks when I told my manager and at that point had no choice as I was signed off sick. I battled hyperemesis in that time but managed to hide it quite well at work (god knows how!!). By then I'd had an emergency scan though due to being unwell so knew the baby was ok.

MeadowHay · 26/02/2018 19:36

I told mine about 6/7 weeks cos I got HG and had already self-certified for a week so needed signing off by my GP, so I didn't really have a choice. I told my line manager and asked him not to tell any of my colleagues so he just had to tell his line manager, and HR. I was so ill I didn't end up returning to work in the end until I was about 16/17 weeks pregnant so I broke the news with my colleagues when I returned. If I had the choice I would have waited until after the 12 week scan, but if you do need to take time off work due to pregnancy-related sickness you're best off telling them so it goes down separately on your absence record.
