I literally haven't had any pregnancy symptoms but migraines and had some pains last week,I had a terrible terrible cold I couldn't function,I'm 10+4 today and rang in sick again with a terrible migraine again! Anyone else had to ring in loads? They'll be getting pissed with me because there's a few of us of but it's made me sick this morning. Just wanted to rant xx

If your work knows your pregnant then it's treated differently than normal sickness leave - if not then could be issues?

And I have IIH so migraines are my familiar friend atm so I feel that pain.

Brownbear84 · 26/02/2018 11:03

Yes my work know I told them straight away. Just feel crap having to let them down all the time but I have a job where I can't just sit down unfortunately and a migraine kills me. Used to use migraleve to manage it but can't at the min xx

If youre too ill to be at work then youre too ill and theres not much that can be done. But it might be worth checking the absence policy just in case. At my work it's only pregnancy related sickness that gets classified separately so things like colds or headaches dont necessarily count as being pregnancy related. In practice I think most managers would be lenient and not put you through proceedings but I just wanted to mention it as I keep seeing posters saying if you're pregnant it automatically doesn't count, which isn't 100% accurate.

gryffen · 26/02/2018 11:46

totally agree with Girl

Coughs, colds and sneezes arent pregnancy related (or impossible to directly relate too) and may require doctors letter to prove they are working on a solution for you (IIH - been there when work tried to fire me = nuerologist came to my hearing).

I would suggest nipping to doctors and speaking to them, get some insight and hell even getting a referall to pain managment or nuero - least that way you can say i suffer from migraines and this is the pathway my doctor has used for treatment.

not the best or easiest and i really do get the pain you in but maybe time to discuss with work if when you do go in and get a migraine what procedure could be put into place (aka a dark room) and you would make the time up.

Brownbear84 · 26/02/2018 12:36

Obviously been pregnant means your immune system is low so more susceptible to colds, flu etc thankfully my work take that into account. I've suffered a long time with migraines now but obvs can't manage them as I usually would xx

Have you asked the doctor if there are alternative medications you can take while pregnant? I'd suggest this for your own sake, as well as to demonstrate to work that you're trying to find an alternative. If you've done that and they can't help you, I would have thought (I have worked in HR but not an expert in this area) you had a reasonably strong case that the reason you're unable to work is pregnancy related; the pregnancy isn't giving you the migraines but it's stopping you treating/preventing them and thus having an adverse effect on your ability to work.

MeadowHay · 26/02/2018 19:31

I know where you're coming from OP as I had a few migraines in first trimester and normally I take ibuprofen & codeine to manage the pain although even with that I need a dark room, sleep, and a cold patch on my head so I still couldn't go to work with a migraine but I get it's harder to manage when pregnant. I spoke to my GP and they said I could take OTC-strength codeine with paracetamol when the pain was at its worst so I did that on a few occasions which helped. I agree you should be speaking to your GP because people do often take codeine products during pregnancy so there are some painkillers you can try and you do need to be wary about showing work you're doing things to try and solve the problem should they get arsey about it.

I seem to be ill and off work a lot at the moment. I'm 19 weeks and work must be so fed up of me but I just can't work. In between anxiety, morning sickness, back problems and now a virus that I can't shift I've been a mess and I'm so fed up but if I was well enough to be in work I would be. But I know how stressful it is having to ring in, I just sit here imagining all the eye rolling and 'ffs not again' comments that would never be said to my face!

Brownbear84 · 27/02/2018 09:46

Thankyou ladies I've got antenatal next Tuesday gonna ask if I can take anything,I'm so fed up!! My daughter is poorly today so means I am home with her without having to ring in and say she's poorly which annoys them too!!! Xxx

I have hormone related migraines so I sympathise. Try your Dr to see if you can take any triptans whilst pregnant.

Brownbear84 · 27/02/2018 10:16

Thankyou I will do when I see him next week xx

Don’t worry about it. The thing about pregnancy is that you can’t deal with illnesses the way you usually do. I took two days off with a cold. I would have been fine if I could have dosed up on lemsip but I couldn’t which makes a simple cold simply incompatible with work. You just have to say to yourself that the baby is more important than work. It’s hard but give yourself time to recover.

Brownbear84 · 28/02/2018 06:46

I still haven't gone back in,My heads constantly pounding and I just feel so crap! Gonna see what tomorrow morning brings hopefully be able to get back in xx

Do work know you're pregnant? Under Equality Act 2010, pregnancy-related sickness does not count towards disciplinary issues etc. That's why it is counted differently.

Brownbear84 · 03/03/2018 20:41

@bibijayne yes they do hun I told them at 5 weeks soon as I found out as I do lifting etc. Thankyou for the info that's made me feel better xx

I've gone in late everyday since my morning sickness started at 8 weeks plus had two days off when I've literally been unable to get out of bed. I feel bad but mine and babies health is more important and things will go back to normal once the sickness eases off.

Brownbear84 · 05/03/2018 17:49

Went to see the doc today he signed me of for two weeks which I feel miles better about as doctors orders, work can't say anything! He wouldn't give me anything for the headaches at all,Just paracetamol and bloody tons of water he said which never help anyway xx

Hope you're feeling better. A word of caution though the law only protects pregnancy related illness. Anything like a headache which is not pregnancy related directly is not covered by this. They may be understanding but they can still follow normal absence procedures for non pregnancy stuff.
