High blood pressure reading in early pregnancy

SpongeCake23 · 25/02/2018 16:13

I'm 7+3 and just took my blood pressure as I've had a bit of a headache today. My BP before pregnancy ran on the low to normal side (110/65 was about the average).
When I took it today it was 137/85!!!
Since having a sit down and a rest it's gone down to 118/70.

Is this something to be worried about so early on?

I would leave it to the professionals rather than doing it yourself and worrying yourself sick xx

Hi Spongecake, congratulations on your pregnancy. Definitely speak to your doctor, and monitor yourself at home. At this stage high blood pressure isn't a huge concern but if it is consistently high, it does need to be under control. I'm 23 weeks and at 8 weeks I went to the doctor and it really consistently high. I'm now in labetalol and all is going fine. If this happens to you, you will be closely monitored for pre-eclampsia as you are higher risk with chronic high blood pressure, but this isn't a factor until after 20 weeks. Keep an eye on it, speak to your doctor and good luck with your pregnancy.

I should also add, your highest reading is still in the "high normal" range.

CobaltRose · 25/02/2018 18:17

That reading is still within normal, albeit on the higher end. Pre-eclampsia is not really a risk until the 20th week of pregnancy. Definitely mention it to your midwife and they will closely monitor you.

It's worth mentioning if you're worried but I agree with pp that it's best to leave the monitoring to midwives and doctors rather than stressing yourself out.
You can't have pre eclampsia at this stage - they monitor every pregnant women for it in the second half of pregnancy.
Also a headache caused by PE or high BP is more severe than "a bit of a headache". It's generally a severe, frontal headache with visual changes.

Loosemoose28 · 25/02/2018 19:18

Unless you are taking it with a cuff and stethascope chances are some of those readings are inaccurate. Home bought BP machines are unreliable.

Mine was quite high earlier in pregnancy but then dropped back down and it’s fine now. I wouldn’t worry at 7 weeks though

Rumpledfaceskin · 25/02/2018 19:23

Seriously I wouldn’t worry. Mine pre pregnancy is lower side of normal and when measured at booking in was on the the very cusp of normal before going into high. It always was for my last pregnancy too with no problems. The midwife will keep a strong eye on it and your urine tests for any problems. There may also be a bit of white coat hypertension too.

SpongeCake23 · 25/02/2018 19:27

I do have bad white coat syndrome which is why I bought the blood pressure machine for home.
