Hi all,

does anybody have any experience of this? I had a midwife appointment this morning and she was yet another one whom i have never seen before and will never see again!
Anyway i felt she was pretty useless and really rather vague about everything.
I am 25 weeks pg and apparently measuring at 30 weeks!!!!!!
I am reasonably convinced she measured me wrong, she seemed to atart from very llow down, and she didn't listen to heartbeat, but if she did measure right does anybody know why this might be. dh is really worried that something awful is wrong and i dont really have anything to reassure him with as i have no experience of this - all i know is that they usually throw a bit of a wobbly if you measure small for dates.

Frankly i am unsure she was a real midwife , she told me i couldn't have had morning sickness at 18 weeks because it stops by 12!!!!!!
I hope i get a decent midwife next time.

Sorry for very long rant.

Can you make an appointment to see a different midwife? If she did measure you correctly, you may have to have a diabetes test, they may even send you for another scan to see if it it the baby that is big, or if you are just carrying a lot of water, of course if your suspicions are right and she has measured you wrong, then no harm in just asking the midwife to check everything over.

ring and get a different midwife, this needs to be checked again, incase you need a scan or something. maybe your gp could measure you?

im sure she just did it wrong

Babylovesmuffins · 03/05/2007 16:56

Definitely ring and ask for it to be checked by a different m/w. Any decent m/w should know that some women can have sickness right the way through their pgy...

They're supposed to measure from the pubic bone upwards, so any lower than that and she's maybe measured you wrong

I'm sure all will be fine but for your peace of mind you should probably get a 2nd opinion.

PS - it makes me so angry, my m/w was rushing the last time and I noticed afterwards she had entered the same blood pressure reading in my notes, as the time before, even though she didn't even check my BP!!!!!

BLM-was that recently ?! ask for it to be checked asap, its very important

I measured 5cm over my week number throughout the second half of pregnancy (i.e. 29 cm at 24 weeks, 33 cm at 28 weeks, etc.) and had a growth scan at 35 weeks. They weren't at all fussed until there'd been a consistent pattern of being that far ahead -- one high measurement on its own as often as not can be down to a growth spurt or the baby lying in an odd position.

In my case the growth scan showed a big baby (they predicted he'd be around 10lb 7oz at full term and he arrived a few days early at 10lb 5.5oz -- sometimes growth scans can be right, although they get a bad press and their accuracy is only something like 80% of birth weights accurate to within plus or minus 10%!) and slight polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid).

Because of the big baby they kept testing me for gestational diabetes, but my blood sugar levels stubbornly refused to do anything other than behave themselves perfectly . And polyhydramnios can be related to problems with kidneys/digestive system, so they had a good look at those areas on the scan. Again, DS was fine. Polyhydramnios can affect how the birth is managed, though (for example, often means that artificially breaking your waters may be higher-risk than normal) so is worth knowing about.

Some consultants like to induce big babies early, but the research shows that that doesn't actually do anything to reduce the likelihood of complications. In my case they offered me an elective c/s if I wanted but recommended trying spontaneous vaginal delivery, which was my preferred option too. I went into labour naturally - I did eventually end up with an unplanned c/s but DS was both posterior positioned and never engaged. If you do turn out to have a big baby, if your baby is anterior and engages before you go into labour your chances of a successful vaginal delivery are good.

In your case it does sound as though she may have been pretending to be a midwife for a bet :grin, though, so I wouldn't worry. If you're still measuring big at your next appointment then they are likely to want to investigate further, but even then probably nothing to worry about.

Hi Scorpio - that was the time before last, so I've had it checked since (last week) and all appeared normal. It makes me so mad though, this is my first pg and I've got loads of questions I want to ask the m/w but they always rush me through - I sometimes feel as if they don't care unless we have a serious problem.

PS - don't get me wrong, I am happy that all has been normal so far but it's just nice to get reassurance on things...

Clara - Sorry for hijacking

Hi clarahj
When i had my 33 week scan my bumps measurements were 37 weeks for bpl 40 weeks hc & 40 weeks & 2 days for hc!!!!
Been told the bump roughly weighed 7 lb already, as you can imagine i'm pretty stressed but seriously don't worry i personally believe that unless the baby is born only then can accurate measurements be taken.
If at your next midwife app the bump still measures big than ask if you could have a detailed scan that should be a bit more reassuring.
Good luck
