Should your Blood pressure and water sample be checked at every antenatal appointment?

Hi ladies,

Attended my 28 week appointment on Thursday to be told it was running late! Hmm
Anyway after about 15 minutes went in to find it wasn't my usual midwife. She asked me some questions the usual ... Then asked me if i'd been for any growth scans. I'm not exactly sure why she asked this tbh as this was real first proper time she was measuring me.Confused Also asked if I had been for any blood tests this week. Which I replied no, as wasn't aware of it.

Anyway.., after her measuring me, she said to come back in 3 weeks. It wasn't till I got home I unzipped my bag to see the water sample I had done previous to coming the doctors... Then thought she didn't do my blood pressure. Hmm
I phoned the doctors and told the receptionist and she seemed to think if she didn't ask for the sample she must not of needed it.
The more I think of it tho, the more wrong I thin it is, as on my notes she has put negative to both things they cheek for in water sample. Angry
Wanted your advice on this problem as tempted to book in with the nurse to get her to check.
Thanking you for the replies in advance! xx

Yes, I think they should. It seems to be the one constant for every appointment I’ve ever had, anyway. Try and book another appointment for next week.

Stumbleine · 24/02/2018 07:25

Yes, it should be done at each check. Can you call the midwives office and ask for another appointment?

PeachesandPie · 24/02/2018 07:32

Yes you should have your bp and urine checked at every appointment. At 28 weeks I would also expect the midwife to listen to the baby's heart rate. Definitely go back rather than wait 3 weeks.

MrsL2016 · 24/02/2018 08:16

I have bp urine measurement and Doppler check at every appointment and you are supposed to have another set of bloods at 28 weeks. Ring the community midwives number and speak to them. They will probably want you back in.

strawberrysparkle · 24/02/2018 08:24

They check my blood pressure and urine every time however I've never had the heartbeat checked and I'm 33 weeks

WTFIsThisVirus · 24/02/2018 08:28

At every single appointment I had, they checked my blood pressure and sample. They often joked that they were fascinated with urine lol.

From week 16 onwards, they used the Doppler to listen for DSs heartbeat.

I can't remember exactly when they did my bloods.

MustBeThursday · 24/02/2018 09:09

Yes both should been checked along with baby's heart rate. You would usually be due a blood test at 28 weeks too. You need to get in touch with the midwifery team you are under and you also need to inform them that the midwife you saw documented results that she hadn't taken, which is obviously very bad practice!

DetectiveDog · 24/02/2018 09:25

Yes to blood pressure and urine test every time.

KochabRising · 24/02/2018 09:27

This is a big deal - recording results that weren’t taken is a serious breach.

You need to report this and you need to get those samples and measurements taken. The practice will take this very very seriously.

Countingsheeeep · 24/02/2018 09:36

Urine, blood pressure and Doppler at every appointment for me.

Twitchett22 · 24/02/2018 11:02

Same for me me, that's the only real point in going imo. Urine, bp and doppler, and im sure i had bloods at my 28 weekappt, aswell as this being the first time she'd measured my bump.
Ring the mw team and explain, and make sure you tell them that she's documented your urine as negative without even testing it. Thats falsifying records and she probably does it all the time so you need to say something before she puts more people in danger

gryffen · 24/02/2018 11:42

Well that midwife is gonna be in trouble.

It happened to me in first pregnancy due to bad weather so they ran over an hour late and didn't do half of things I needed- phoned up while outside and management told me to get back there asap since I'm consultant based.

And falsifying records is grounds to loose licence.

RosaBaby2 · 24/02/2018 12:42

Yes BP and urine check at every appt. I also have had heartbeat check every appt since 16 weeks but know that not every trust does this. Bloods to be taken at 28 weeks to check for anaemia and blood group. Definitely give them a call!

Fakingit36 · 24/02/2018 14:09

What are they checking for in the urine? Just curious- they don’t do this in the US where I am. BP of course yes. Sounds terrible that they falsified your record - make a fuss!

DetectiveDog · 24/02/2018 14:55

Faking I think they’re checking for proteins which could be a sign of pre eclampsia and possibly other things too, not sure!

TheCatsMother44 · 24/02/2018 15:00

It's bad enough that the midwife didn't do the things she was meant to have but to falsify your medical records is absolutely shocking. I'm sure nothing will come of it but just imagine if something were to happen, you were to be admitted to hospital and then rely on the info in your notes to find out what's going on.

I would 100% speak to someone else about this. Can you call your normal midwife and have a chat with her?

Clevs · 24/02/2018 15:08

Blood pressure and urine at every appointment for me. At my last appointment I forgot the urine sample (I went before leaving the house and then remembered!) and she gave me a pot to do there and then.

Bloods at 28 weeks.

Doppler at every appointment from 16 weeks onwards.

Steeley113 · 24/02/2018 15:14

Blood pressure and urine dip at each appointment. Checking for pre-e, diabetes and infection. It’s the main reason for the appointments so I’m cross they didn’t do it. Plus 28 weeks they need to take bloods (unless you’ve had a gtt) as you need a fresh hb and group and save.

Fakingit36 · 24/02/2018 15:16

Yeah they do some urine tests here (and seemingly endless bloods) but it’s not a routine thing at every apt .

Loosemoose28 · 24/02/2018 15:51

Call the hospital main number and speak to an operator. Ask for midwifery matrons.

Loosemoose28 · 24/02/2018 15:51

Matrons are Mon-Fri so you wont reach them today.

KochabRising · 24/02/2018 17:02

I'm sure nothing will come of it

We fired a nurse for this exact thing about two months ago. It’s incredibly serious.

YummyMummy247 · 24/02/2018 17:13

Thank you so much ladies... You have reassured me that I wasn't over reacting!
Yes she measured my bump and listened to heart beat but just didn't test water sample. Looking at my notes again she has wrote Negative. Then on my Bp she has put Sys Bp 110 Dia 60. AngryAngryAngry
I'm absolutely furious as only just proper looked at it especially the Bp figures!
It's my second pregnancy but even tho I'm low risk there is no need to making up figures.
I was going to just ring the doctors on Monday to go see the nurse about checking my water and Blood pressure. Confused Also to mention to them the situation.
But do you think it would be best to see the midwife this week?

Also does it matter that I'll be going for bloods at the end of next week. In work all week. Next Friday morning is the best time to go but I'll be 29 +4 xx

What I meant was that I'm sure the OP's health is fine, I didn't want to worry her even though I think it serious that the midwife didn't do the checks she should have.

KochabRising · 24/02/2018 17:21

Oh yes of course :) I’m sure OP will be ok, they can do the tests if she’s seen soon. :)
