SPD - any experience anyone?

Just that really! As a bit of background, I suffer with polyhydramnios and chronic urinary retention. Bladder had become distended last week so had a catheter out in then taken out. Baby seems to have moved...think bladder was blocking her way!

Anyway, so since then I assumed I'd got a water infection because it's soooooo painful doing a wee and walking. Feels just like a water infection but no bacteria at all in the sample. It seems bad when I go to the toilet and when I'm either getting out of bed or off the sofa.

My midwife mentioned SPD but I don't know if that would explain the burning when I wee but she seemed to think it might.

Any thoughts or experiences welcome

Oh sorry just to add I'm 35+6, not sure if that means anything!

I had horrendous SPD but absolutely no experience of burning when I urinated. Sounds like you're having a tough time, I hope things ease up for you soon Thanks

@CurlyWurlyCatcher would you mind telling me what your symptoms were? The midwife seems to think that the sore pee hole (sorry, that's gross!) could be down to trauma inserting catheter and this SPD is something different.

I just find it hard to imagine it's another thing I've got wrong but she knows more than me, so I'm minded to listen to her.

Sorry for the late reply. My symptoms were horrific pain in my pelvis, almost right above my vagina but not in my vagina if that makes sense. It also created pain all down the fronts of my thighs from my pelvis. It ached almost all of the time but it hurt most to walk, so much so that I could hardly walk by the end. I still get pain in my right thigh now when my period is due/has started and my youngest is 3.5 years old.

Oh and if I was laying down flat then I couldn't raise my legs any higher into the air than my body - if that makes sense? I just had no strength at the tops of my thighs at all.

SPD feels like your hips are falling apart. The pain is excrutiating. Walking is impossible without paying for it later. Was on crutches with DD and housebound with DS2.

Hope you find the cause x

I've got spd but have also had issues with pain when weeing - although it is different to a uti, feel achy down there and a bit sore, almost as if someone has kicked me between the legs. But i hadn't really associated it with spd as that's been more about struggling with getting about, if anything I thought thrush.

Yes spd but no urinary pain. It was a combination of aching pelvis kind of like having been kicked in the crutch where you front pelvis is. Could also feel some movement. Referred aching between thighs and my buttocks. My hips also ached and my lower back felt odd. Ached more the more I walked. It's not easy to describe the pain when you start to get it and it took me weeks to realise I had a problem.

You will need to be careful with your movements and restrict how much you walk. Also an osteopath is great but nhs should refer to physio. The earlier you get it the better.

But your urinary burning pain is probably related to your catheter. It's not an spd issue. Spd is basically the loosening of your pelvic ligaments which makes the area unstable. this causes pain when you walk in that area, the sense that it's loose or gappy or sometimes clicky for some people and usually referred pain from your muscles in your legs or buttocks as your body tries to adjust and stabilise you.

I found the osteopath the best treatment. I found then recommended on pelvic partnership website which I highly recommend to you.

It also is very individual because it aggravates underlying pelvic or hip issues. Hence some people have more pain than others. And in different areas.

I've had SPD with each pregnancy (this is my third) but thankfully only mildy. I'm 18+6 and I currently get pain while walking or on big movements of my legs and hips but all focussed between my legs at either side right underneath. Its not bad and certainly nothing I cant deal with and hopefully it wont get much worse.
No burning or such symptoms though.

Thanks very much for replies. I do remember at the beginning of my pregnancy my midwife saying I might have some hip issues as I had a hip disease (perthes) as a child. It only seems to be when I (ahem) open my legs to get out of bed, and it's right at the front, basically where the bladder is situated.

I also get a lot of pain in my hips when I'm lying on my side ie if I lie on my left then my left hip seems to hurt a lot after a while, but other than this awful pubic region pain nothing else. Doesn't hurt in my bum or legs or knees.

For what it's worth I've drank a bit more and the stinging has stopped a bit (YAY!!) but the pain when walking is still there.

As PPs have mentioned it seems to have varying degrees of pain and not one single set of symptoms so makes it hard to understand!
