now I'm not overly concerned as I'm still in the 'normal' range - but 3 weeks ago I was measuring 31cm (at 32+3 weeks) today at 35+2 I'm only measuring 32cm........MW didn't seem too concerned but seen as though I measured 'big' in both DS's pg I can't help but worry a bit.

As she said it could be the position he's lying in, and also I haven't put on as much weight this time (put on 5st with DS1, and 3st with DS2 only put on 1st 7lb so far with this pg) so extra 'fat' on my tummy could have made me measure big for them (they were average weights of 7lb 5 and 7lb 11).

Has anyone else had previous pg's where they measured big, then one where they measured small but where their DC was a decent weight???

We don't 'measure' women where I work because it is too inaccurate. I wouldn't worry about it.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 03/05/2007 12:31

Agree with mears

Quite the reverese for me to you though- no problems with DS1 and DS2's measuerments, both quite small (DS1 not growing picked up on an extra scan but external measurements fine)- DS1 5 lb 5 oz, DS2 6 lb 11.5 ox.

DS3 I was put on early amt leave after measuring small for a while, lots of apnic- 7lb 4 oz LOL!

I measured small at about this stage with first pg - they scanned me then decided it might be "because i was tall" baby perfectly normal size a few weeks later!

fannyannie · 03/05/2007 12:39

Thanks - I think I know I'm just being paranoid - and certainly my MW wasn't really too bothered about it (kind of got the feeling she only measures to make sure she's filled in all the 'correct' details on the notes LOL) either - but then these silly late pg hormones kicked in and I semi-freaked out after she'd left

if your m/w isn't worried, I wouldn't worry about it

If she's an experienced m/w then she will "know" roughly how big a baby of that gestational ages feels & can check that from feeling your bump.

The tape measure method is often wildy inaccurate.

ghosty · 03/05/2007 13:26

I've never understood the measuring thing.
I mean, at 40 weeks I measured 40cm. DD was 10lbs and 10oz.
So how can a 40 week bump with a 7lb baby in it measure 40cm? I have always thought I have missed something there ...

Saturn74 · 03/05/2007 13:35

I always measured 2-3 weeks behind gestation with DS2. At 39+ weeks I measured 35cm, so they scanned me, told me he weighed just over 4.5lbs, and induced me that day, saying that he would have to go straight to SCBU.
He actually weighed 6lbs 4oz though, so all was well.

tokentotty · 03/05/2007 13:38

Could it have moved downwards ready to engage and therefore left the bit she measured smaller than before ?

PizPizPiz · 03/05/2007 15:35

This is my 2nd pg and like you I measure a bit less than I should. But the mw told me that the fact that I'm tall could be relevant (although I don't really understand the logic myself ) and that she would start to worry at -4cm. I also measured small for my 1st, and she weighed 9Lbs 2oz at birth !
Nothing to worry about.

With dd I measured bang on what I should do according to this method. DD had IUGR and was 4 lbs 9 oz when she was born so not very accurate methinks.
