I'm 6 weeks pg now. Wwyd? I'm pretty sure my two dc have had it at some point. Someone in dds class has it and are in school (no need to stay home apparently)

Thanks 😊

You can get a blood test to check your immunity. How accessible is your GP??

somersetsoul · 22/02/2018 18:01

Maybe I'll call them tomorrow. My dc haven't got it... yet.

Once the rash comes out they aren't contagious any more.

Starlighter · 22/02/2018 18:40

Often you don’t know if they have slapped cheek until the rash comes out (the symptoms can be very ambiguous) and by then it’s not contagious.

So I’m not sure how you can avoid slapped cheek really?!

It could be at school, at a cafe, soft play, a friend's house... You would literally have to keep you and your dd indoors until you give birth! Confused

It's scary isn't it. I knew it was dangerous but didn't read into it until today.

Slapped cheek was the reason I lost my baby. Get to your doctors asap for a blood test, they'd then see if you have contracted the virus & monitor your pregnancy. This wasn't on offer to me last year and I lost mine at 6 weeks, only found out at my 12 week scan.

Bluemermaid I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll phone the dr when they open.

It really is unavoidable. It's always going round school in the winter.

Hope you get on OK with doctor. A large number of people have been exposed and therefore have immunity but as the virus doesn’t always present with a rash you wouldn’t necessarily know. If you already have two DC then I think there is a strong chance that you have been previously exposed and have immunity but only a blood test can tell you for sure. Good luck.

Hi, slapped cheek is extremely dangerous if caught during pregnancy! I caught it and almost lost my baby. At first me and my children were at a party and one of yhe children had a random red rash on her body and arms. Her mother assumed some allergic reaction so still brought her to the party. A few days later I got a phone call saying the child I was sat beside had slapped cheek and to tell my midwife, I was 13 weeks at the time so went to the dr and he ran a blood test and it came back I did not have slapped cheek... but was not immune!! My midwife said we had to check my blood every 4 weeks to see if I had caught slapped cheek but hopefully I wouldn’t, at 15 weeks she ran the test again and I got a call the next morning telling me to head straight to fetal medicine as I had caught th virus! When I got there 3 drs scanned me and confirmed my baby had the virus too and had developed fetal anemia and was a high chance he would soon pass!! They talked about in utero blood transfusions but because I was just shy of 16 weeks they told me the chance of a miscarriage from this prodecdure was high. I was scanned daily and my baby’s anemia began to subside, thankfully he made a full recovery and didn’t develop fetal hydrops either which often comes after slapped cheek. He’s 5 now but it was a very scary time, I had no idea some child hood harmless virus could be so fatal to an unborn baby who I believed was protected inside of me. Please go to your gp and ask for a blood test to check for immunity, if you are immune then that’s great

So sorry for your loss, blue, and for the worry that you experienced, nikki. Just to concur with pp, however, the source of your exposure to the virus won’t have been the little girl with the rash at the party. Once the rash comes out the child is no longer contagious, which is why it’s almost impossible to quarantine.

somersetsoul · 23/02/2018 14:42

Just had a drs appointment. No need to worry until I know I've been in contact with it. He explained what will happen then.

I feel a bit weird though, he asked if I was going to continue with the pregnancy. I said yes of course. It it normal to be asked that??

Her rash had only begun to come out that morning. And have you confirmed your pregnancy already with your gp? As usually they ask if it was planned and if you are continuing when you first tell them, wel mine did anyways

somersetsoul · 23/02/2018 15:42

I hadn't told them before so that makes sense!
