First midwife appointment

Hi everyone!

I've just discovered that I am pregnant, about five weeks. This is my first pregnancy so this is all very new to me.

I rang up my GP surgery in order to make an appointment and was told that I didn't even need to see a GP, that I could come down to the surgery and ask for a 'midwife pack' and a midwife would be assigned to me. I've never heard of this before and always thought I'd be seeing a GP, but I don't mind seeing a midwife instead.

I'm assuming I won't see a midwife today if I go to pick up the pack and will instead be given an appointment? What does it involve? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Congrats!! Very exciting. We have the same system here, no GP appt needed just refer to midwife yourself. Ours is between 8-10 weeks here.

First appr is basic history, partner details if relevant, height/weight, blood test. Then just a brief rundown of how your appts will progress moving forward. Oh & a wee test so try not to pee prior to your appt 😂

Congrats Flowers

I imagine you'll be given an apt for in a couple of weeks time.

It usually takes around an hour and your midwife will:

  • take weight & measurements
  • blood pressure check
  • possibly dip your urine
  • discuss health history on both sides
  • discuss vitamins, foods to avoid etc.
  • give relevant phone numbers
  • explain the service to you
  • book you for a 12 week scan
  • discuss domestic abuse

Hope all goes well!

Thank you, @mustbemad17!

The only thing I'm concerned about is that I've currently got the implant in! I'm terrified it has hurt my baby even though everything I've read says it doesn't.

I reckon I was already pregnant (just) when it was inserted. We always used condoms before that (and for the first seven days after insertion) so I have no idea how this pregnancy occurred, but now it's happened I'm excited. But also terrified Grin

If you have the implant, I'd call for a separate Gp appointment asap to see what needs to be done. With waiting lists as they are, get in as soon as you can so it can be sorted.

You could book a GP appt for the implant being removed, that's seperate to your pregnancy booking in appt anyway 🙂

I'm on baby number three & still have moments of utter terror haha so don't worry about that, think it's pretty normal especially for a first

Thanks everyone. I have the number for my local sexual health clinic, which was the same place I had the implant inserted. Could I simply ring them up and make an appointment to have it removed?

I had mine removed at the clinic it was inserted at, so definitely worth a shot

CobaltRose · 19/02/2018 11:19

Thanks everyone. I'll ring up the clinic ASAP for advice.

I've got an appointment for 2:30 tomorrow at the sexual health clinic. I assume I'm having the implant taken out Grin
