Possible Carbon dioxide exposure in pregnancy

I am totally consumed with worry. Our gas cooker has been making our pots and pans black, realising yesterday a sooty black. Sooo googled it and found out the cooker could be producing carbon dioxide. Its been doing it for atleast 6 months.

We have an alarm in the kitchen quite near to the cooker and it has never gone off.... we have no symptoms. We are obviously going to get someone in to loom at the cooker

But i am 18 weeks pregnant and terrified that i have been taking in even small doses of carbon dioxide when we cook.

I am in a mess with anxiety.

Thoughts please

I think you mean carbon monoxide. If you really are worried there is a simple blood test that can be done to check levels in your blood. We do it in my A&E Department. GP practices wouldn’t have the correct analyser so you might need to attend hospital if it will help out your mind at rest. Can you speak to a midwife tomorrow?

Boredoftryingusernames · 18/02/2018 07:55

My midwife had a little carbon monoxide detector I blew into at my first appointment - maybe phone your midwife on Monday and check if it's something they can check for you. If you have a working detector at home by the kitchen then hopefully there is nothing to worry about, but getting checked will put your mind at rest.

KadabrasSpoon · 18/02/2018 07:56

Your detector is likely to be carbon monoxide which is odorless.
Carbon dioxide is in the air all around us at a low concentration.
Do you have any illness or symptoms?

Carbon monoxide is always produced by a burning flame. Low levels are normal and even a non smoker who blows into a carbon monoxide test will have a result of some description if they drive/live in a town, etc.

Think I blew 6 last time I took a test which is pretty high for a non smoker.

If the alarm didn’t go off it’s very unlikely that levels were high enough to be a problem. Are you sure the alarm is working, have you tested it?

I’ve had carbon monoxide poisoning once and knew about it. An alarm certainly saved my life as it woke me up. Stupidly I thought the alarm was faulty and kind of ignored the problem most of the night and kept putting the alarm out the window to turn it off. The next day I felt so sick, worst abdominal pain of my life. Went and bought a new alarm, got back, fell asleep that afternoon as was so tired and woke up to both alarms going off!

I realised our gas fire was leaking about 5 weeks ago and will have been for a good few months as every now and then id get a whiff but wasn’t 100% and was approx 27 weeks pregnant luckily no side affects or issues with bump.

Hopefully you’ll all be ok x x

I recently bought a new CO detector that displays the levels digitally. It's always showing zero. It put my mind at rest as my CO reading at the midwife was fairly high for a non smoker and we have gas cooker/boiler and open fires at home.

Thank you so much everyone for your responses xx

I went in to A&E as I was just consumed with worry and knew they could test, i was actually done in 30 mins flat. My CO levels were zero and oxygen levels were 100%. Deep breaths. And the jets on my cooker are being replaced.

I think i need to get my anxiety sorted iut though ahhh. I still cant get it out of my head Confused

Xx
