Emergency Scans

Why do emergency scans take so long? Went up to A&E at the hospital I'm having my baby with yesterday as advised by early pregnancy unit, its a small hospital and the reason to go to A&E and not EPU is because they had no available appointments. Started bleeding like a normal period yesterday Morning, still bleeding now, clots and dark red blood but only when I wipe, got back ache and lower tummy ache too. I'm under no illusion of what it is but why have I got to wait until Tuesday morning for confirmation? Feeling totally lost and feel like I need to know 100% now. Any advice would be appreciated, I'm in the Midlands, UK.

How many weeks are you?
I'm guessing as you went through epu still first trimester?
Sadly, if the scan is to check for potential loss sadly, not checking possible ectopic or you're not hemorrhaging, as there's nothing they can do to change things it won't be seen as an emergency and they'll fit you in to an available routine slot. I know the waiting is horrid, I've been there but the hospitals are just under that much pressure there's nothing else they can do.

I got told off by a poster yesterday for being short with another poster who suggested someone lie to their GP or midwife so they wouldn't have to pay for an early scan they wanted just for an early look for peace of mind. It's that kind of thinking that really doesn't help when there's people like you who really need to be seen.

I'll cross my fingers for you op, after a couple of losses previously I had an early bleed with this pregnancy at 8 weeks, I'm now 25 weeks and still going. I hope you get good news.

I'm really sorry you're going through this. The waiting is hearybreaking when you're already distressed. In an ideal world youd be seen and scanned quickly. But unfortunately maternity services are really overstretched and if they aren't investigating a severe bleed or an ectopic then it isn't as much of an emergency and you can slip down The queue. I hope you're ok.

Thank you guys. I'm only 10 weeks but it's gone worse this afternoon, alot of bigger clots and terrible pain that paracetamol is now struggling with. I don't want to call again because I know they'll just tell me to wait it out but I'm getting a bit scared now. My other half has taken DD out for the day so I can rest so on my own atm. X

I had to waot 7 days for an emergency scan after bleeding at 9 weeks so yours is relatively soon tbh

Wait*

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I have been in the same boat. Unfortunately the reason you are having to wait is because the medical management of what is happening to you is unlikely to change. So it would be for your peace of mind or to confirm your worst fear but it isn’t strictly a medical need. There will be others who sadly need scans for emergency reasons (I have been one of those- rushed down from antenatal to check my placental positioning and then rushed back up). In my case my scan determined the kind of C section I would have for a very premature baby and the potential blood loss. Without it, there was a chance we would have both died.
I hope Tuesday comes as soon as it possibly can and you remain in my thoughts.
